Htc vive vs Oculus Rift S

So which one would you buy?

Personally I feel like the Vive feels like a better built system

Oculus, has thumbsticks and not trackpads.
If you buy a vive, and then the knuckles controllers, you're pretty retarded for not just getting the whole index package.

Bump

So the oculus is better with the touch controls or just standard stuff?

Valve Index.

The controllers are better, hands down. Vive controllers were made for teleport movement, which fucking sucks.

But the Index is going to have the Knuckles controllers which will be better than the oculus controllers.

Would buying a vive be a better option then? If you were to buy the knuckles when they came out that is

I'd suggest waiting because the vive will be 500 bucks, plus the deluxe audio strap if you want competent audio will be $100.
Then you have the index controllers at $279. That's nearly $900, $100 short of the whole index package which has 2nd gen lighthouse tracking and a far,far superior headset vs the vive.

I mean if you want to throw money around, yeah go ahead and get the vive and upgrade it peicemeal.
If you have nothing, become a waitfag for the index package.
Otherwise, get a Rift S for the better visuals vs the vive.

I might just wait. You think anything new is coming out as far as new headsets?

I feel like these have been around a while

I'd say the Vive as the owner of one myself but the Index would probably be best.

They just released new headsets, basically.
There's the HP Reverb which has a fantastic display, costs $650, and has not so great controllers

Oculus put out their Quest and S versions, which are okay. They aren't major upgrades compared to last gen.

The Index is the big papa coming soon. Better everything compared to all headsets. That's what you want if you want the good stuff.

Also HTC put out a stupid, too expensive headset for what it does. Don't get that for any reason.

I don't like the Vive mainly because of the controllers. The Index looks really great though. I have an original Oculus and like it well enough, doubt I'll upgrade until a full generation leap.

I've got a Rift CV1, but what about the index isn't next gen enough?
It's got higher res, higher refresh, expansion port, better audio setup, better visuals, new gen LCD display, new gen tracking, and best in class controller.

If I was a rich man I'd buy one. It's an impressive piece of hardware. When I say next gen I more-so mean it's not really plausible to play games built with that gen in mind on what I currently have. If Oculus comes out with those eye lens shifting things or the controllerless hand tracking or whatever, that sort of thing. Simply new capabilities for the system. I see VR sort of like a console, I don't rebuy consoles just because there's a slim or XL version.

neither.
R´ift is is rebanded lenovo, vive is outdated.
Get index.
If you dont want index now get vive and start swapping parts out for index starting with controllers.
t. vive owner.

>controllerless hand tracking
thats been a thing for a while.
Guess what its not used for vr cause IT SUCKS DICK even when its functioning perfectly.

Controllerless handtracking will give you zero, absolutely zero feedback and will break immersion entirely.
It's an absolute monkey's paw.

Don't, it's a waste of money. You will not experience anything really great outside of 360 vr videos on youtube.

-t own a vive and still waiting for a vr game that takes my breath away.

VR is travelling in two main directions: the Rift Quest and the S are made to appeal to more casual VR players. They're easier to set up, cheaper, and they have fair enough software and games support for people dipping their toes the same way someone dips their toes by playing a console game.
The Index is on the enthusiast side of the spectrum, being more expensive and probably difficult to get up and running with everything, but you'll be able to do a lot more with it.

If you can, play a friend's VR system or something to get a feel. Don't bother getting a Vive, they're basically getting phased out by other headsets at this point. ESPECIALLY the Pro.

There's good 360 vr videos on youtube?

The Quest is probably the easiest to get because it'll be easier to sell to someone else when you want to upgrade once you're sure you want to try VR, or decide VR isn't for you.

>probably difficult to get up and running with everything
I doubt it would be any more difficult than the vive, which is a one time 20 minute venture for anyone who isn't disabled.

>probably difficult to get up and running with everything,
how fucking mentally disabled you gotta be to not be able to:
>put two lighthouses on shelves/screw them into wall and never fucking touch them again ever
>plug wires into pc

SteamVR is pretty notorious for most people as a shitty platform, but I was thinking more of playing third-party titles like hacks and emulation. There's quite a bit of fucking around, which owners of things like the Quest probably won't have to deal with because it's a standalone machine.

>external sensors
too much effort for the layman, user.
Plug in your hdmi, your usb and get to it with the Rift S.
Or just put on a quest and go to town for the hour or two you'll play VR.

If you're an actual enthusiast, you'll get an Index or nothing. Vive is obsolete.

There are like 3 or 4 really good ones, one is of China, the other is inside of a massive church(not a religious person), essentially a tour of the place. Those videos felt very real and for a brief moment transported you there. The same can't really be said for the majority of the vr based games. I think they are really missing the opportunity with VR because it should be about experiencing things, less to do with games and more to do with the videos. Although I would add that playing bioshock infinite using vorpx was mind blowing but it's just not made for VR, that's the problem, not many AAA titles that are built from the ground up for VR and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon. You would think cyberpunk 2077 would be a great candidate for VR but even there they seem to be skipping it.

I never understand why set up is a factor in these purchases. You do it once ever, it's easy as hell no matter what.

These are normies we're talking about. So basically, But that's not what I was originally talking about anyway

steamvr is pretty good.
Its the htc software that you dont need that is absolutely garbage.
other than initial calibration there is as much fucking around as with oculus.
As in none.
Plus it is WAY better software that allows you to customize it a lot more if you want to.

SkyrimVR is actually good, but it's skyrim. I stopped playing after 45 hours maxing the destruction skill and no more spells to get, even with Phendrix and Apocolypse installed. Didn't care about the other schools. Maybe I can do conjurgation while working on bows.
Racing sims, iRacing and Assetto Corsa, are bar none the best VR experiences. They're fantastic.

People don't have dedicated VR spaces
People have girlfriends and wives that hate wires
Easier the set up and put-away, the better for them.
I live alone so not a problem for me.

i pirated fallout4vr modded it to fix retarded dev issues and palyed it for 4 hours before throwing it away because the core game is just so bad.
I didn't even finish tutorial on skyrim before remembering how bad skyrim was.

I've been lucky enough that I haven't had any issues myself. Even before I sync-cabled up the lighthouses I had minimal disconnects. The worst thing I have is I think one of the lenses is slightly out of alignment, but it's not something I notice unless I actively look for it, and I don't really want to go through all the hassle of customer service.

But SteamVR (and all the surrounding software, I suppose) is commonly quoted to me as one of the reasons people don't play VR once they have it, not having to want to deal with drop-out, connectivity issues or something else. I've had people get vocally mad about it, so I thought I'd mention it. I haven't compared it to Oculus' software though.

index has off ear speakers not headphones.

I dont use sync cable. Does it improve tracking?
Never had a disconnect or connectivity issues. Sometimes if i start up vr and close it and start up it doesn't work properly but once I remove cables and reconnect it works fine.

Cool, now it just needs to track individual fingers.

Do we know if Boneworks is going to work for Oculus or is it just for Index?

The Index has that thing within the visor which we don't know what could plug into it. Smellfags, your time might be soon. It seems to be thinking somewhat ahead in that regard, maybe being able to plug in something that improves the headset without needing a full new revision

SteamVR has swappable stuff, but you'll need to buy Lighthouse 2.0 AND be running oculus sensors. At that point, just get the whole index package.

>we don't have to imagine the smell anymore
>special fartpods
>plug in small fan that sprays liquid
I M A G I N E
F O R
N O W

It''ll work for both. Faceberg isn't that perry.

Before I connected them up, I only had a few drop-outs, nothing major. It was mostly out of curiosity that I decided to cable them. Since then, I've had zero disconnects, so I assume they're doing *something*. I don't think the difference means anything major, but they work just fine.
My main issue with SteamVR is when I start a game and the in-game overlay automatically opens, so that the game begins in the background and my hands don't 'register' in the game itself, forcing a restart (I'm looking at H3VR here specifically).

I'm hoping it'll at least have a USB for my Vive n' Chill. Having even those tiny fans helps a ton with the sweat.

I truly believe Zuck wants to see VR as a tech succeed but he also knows he has to market to the normies so the industry doesn't die before it can truly take off

If you're talking about the OG Vive vs the Rift S it's not even close - Rift S

>muffled "muh tracking" from lighthouse1.0lets
