PSO2 has Scratch Tickets. They give you mostly cosmetic stuff, but a lot of really useful and extremely powerful gameplay things are locked behind them too. You can buy them from others with ingame currency, but the only way for new ones to pop up on the market is people getting them through scratches.

Yes I do realize and I already did like 6 years ago with the English patches. I was in the beta tests for this game on PC and played it for a few weeks after the launch but the translations were shit and didn't translate the useful things so I lost interest. I hate playing games that aren't officially in English. Even if the current English patch is perfect, I'd still have to go through hoops just to play it again on PC since making an account required some annoying ass work to accomplish.

They're in a live version of the server now, that means constant changes and tweaks ever few weeks or so but that means your character could get deleted after a major update.

4 was hated by gaijins because of a narrative and tone shift where the story was set on a futuristic earth and featured high school characters. Japan loved it and it was otherwise fine.

5 on the other hand introduced a massive gameplay shift that's to the introduction of an "advanced calss" called hero, which was meant by the developers to outright replace the older classes (you can imagine how people felt about that). The game design in EP5 changed to a faster playstyle that was clearly designed around hero and left the older classes stuck in the past unable to keep up. This caused MASSIVE upset with the playerbase and they had to spend the entire rest of the episode fixing their mistake by making the other classes viable again.

ep5 actually NERFED a lot of classes from ep4 on top of adding hero which was faster and stronger than all the classes and could use techs. The level requirement was even more retarded because you made a class that pretty much made every old class useless but you had to grind 3 classes to 75 to be able to use it. New players were forced to slog through 3 classes before being able to play the only good class.

Yeah. Gunner is the current busted class but it doesn't dominate the game the same way Hero did at Ep5 launch.

The classes have finally recovered as of episode 6, but this is mostly through a lot of bandaiding. Several of the older classes still feel really clunky to play, even if they can keep up in damage now. The gameplay change from episode 5 hasn't changed, though. Its still a much faster game than it was before.

You'd probably want something like techer then, there are tons of weapon camos that would turn your wand into a sword. Hero and phantom more strictly fit this definition, but hero doesn't really cast techs for damage, and for phantom you'd either cast with rod or use katana, not both.
I mean fast in that bosses have gotten faster and more aggressive, as opposed to the older bosses who do nothing but big slow attacks with huge windups.

Phantom. It's a modernized Force that sacrifices the powerful Compound spells for stronger close range options and the ability to use a katana and a rifle. You're weaving spells between rod's melee photon arts, bursting the opponent down with your katana, or taking out crowds of enemies at once with the rifle.

Hunter is one of the best classes in the game currently, and te/ph is fine.

Some classes are fine, some classes keep up solely in damage while being clunky as shit mechanically, some are the reverse, others are just straight up outdated and the fast-paced content makes them hell to play. Hell, even fucking Hero is in a weird spot because its damage revolves around a passive boost you get for not taking a certain amount of damage in a certain amount of time, but literally fucking everything will ruin that boost currently.

Hunter isn't bad these days, just that it takes a very different approach from the other classes.

PSO on Xbox OG was a huge success and it had no content updates and lived on for a few years before it had to be turned off. People underestimate how willing xbros are to have any mmo to play. The difference between a casual and organized tryhard MPA is fucking massive. 2/1/1 versus 3/2/1, with your drops in the last section being dependent on how many times and how well you do the first two parts. Techer is the bitch buff class. The only thing you do is buff, heal, and hit stuff with your wand. By hitting stuff, I mean slow dashing over to mobs and pressing M1 to do your autoattacks that literally any class can do, but yours has extra damage.

Crafting isn't gated by anything except time, sure you can use real money to make your cooldown time go away but you can also get items in certain activities to reduce it as well
Gathering is about the same, you have stamina and can buy stamina drinks when it runs out with a separate currency, but that currency is handed to you out the ass from literally every achievement or activity you do, including story quests

I played the Japanese version for a while before there was English patches. Actually really enjoyed it. Played it again for a little while with patches, but I'd fallen out with the friends I'd had that I played it with so I just played it by myself for a bit and got bored. Always said I'd play it when/if it came to the west, so I'm gonna try it out for sure. At the very least because there's sure to be a huge community for at least the first month.

The former. PSO2 probably has the smallest barrier to entry out of any MMO not released in NA to play as a gaijin, and the unofficial patch, while shitty in parts (mainly fucking retarded name changes and choices), is comprehensive and expedient enough so that it's essentially a non-issue.

I'm excited for it, but I played the JP release with the english patch for the first like 2 years of its life or so.

For everyone that played/still plays this game, can I see players more than 10 metres away yet? When I played PSO2 2 years ago or something I know there was a slider that made it so I could see up to 100 players, but only if they were within 10 metres from my character and they only way I could see beyond that was with a modtool that stopped being updated.

I'll probably play it since my friends are interests in it and I remember early on the fan translations being a pain in the ass to implement. I just hope their updating schedule isn't too far behind and they're not gonna do the same shit as Fate Grand Order where they follow the same timeframe to give players the "same experience". Speed that shit up.

So I don't know how this works, since they're releasing it at Chapter 6, does that mean we cannot play through Chapters 1-5 story content? Or is all that still available to play through?

the story itself is permanently available and just a series of cutscenes and a few quests, the content from 1-5 is largely irrelevant and worthless but also still mostly available

You had all the chance in the world. I tried it out years ago, but I just didn't really enjoy it all too much. Probably that I just don't seem to like MMOs and had nostalgia from the first one's split screen.
