To make the boss fight more interesting. The Vergil boss fight in 5 is so bad. He plays out like a generic video game boss with big boss attacks instead of a 1v1 rival fight like on 3 or Dante in 4.

Isn't most of playable Vergil moves a "big boss attack"? Most of what I have seen is possible to be playable, SDT Dante also has "big boss attacl" with one in particular similar to Vergil's.

I think they genuinely ran out of time and budget and the game was originally supposed to be bigger in regard to content. Sure, anyone can argue that 20 missions for DMC is par for the course and we shouldn't complain but the relatively short length of the campaign doesn't really do service to having three playable characters with two recurring ones coming with greatly expanded arsenal and new mechanics to top it off. You don't really get time to master any of the characters before the game is over and there's also weird shit like Cerberus being unlocked right before a boss-only level, or Nero finally unlocking the rest of his moveset in the FINAL MISSION that also doubles as a tutorial with pause prompts and all, not to mention it recycles the final boss.

Again, one could argue it's for replay value but I greatly doubt Nero's DB and DT were originally planned to be unlocks solely for harder difficulties, I mean if you look at previous games DT is more of a mid-game unlock, definitely not something introduced in a tutorial battle in the final level.
