Limitations for devs imply a need for creativity. Level design, loading screens that don't interrupt the action or actually serve a purpose, nooks and cranies to hide things and maximise what can be done in minimal space.
The endless quest to throw more power at the problem means they completely remove any kind of limitations for people who already are creatively bankrupt. This is not to say that limitations are necessary, but there is a reason why some old games are still really good to this day.
