I've read maybe 40 books voluntarily, which isn't a lot but I'm positive it's more than the average person, and I found ASOIAF more exciting than almost all of them. The only books I'd say I liked more were Lolita and The Metamorphosis.

I haven't read many fantasy books, but honestly, most of the "legendary" books I've read have been fucking boring. Don Quixote was the biggest fucking chore to read; it took me forever and I think I cracked a smile two or three times. A Confederacy of Dunces is even worse. I've read six Discworld books and they're just your garden variety, pun-filled, nauseously snarky British "humor." Moby Dick starts out really exciting when it's introducing all the characters, and then it becomes really fucking boring for like 70 chapters until Moby Dick finally shows up and kills everyone, which is appropriate because I felt like the book Moby Dick was killing me; it was 23 chapters of build-up for a million chapters of explaining whaling and foreshadowing, and finally 3 chapters of Wrestlemania. H.P. Lovecraft is interesting, but everyone says he's a shit writer, so I can just agree with them and not have to explain myself.

But he's one of my fav authors. I'm actually studying a collection of his short stories at the moment. I've got one of his books on my desk right next to me, and another one of his books on the floor at my feet. I even had to visit his wikipedia page not more than 2-3 months ago and don't recall seeing that he had died, so I guess it must have been just before he passed.

I don't visit Yea Forums anymore, and I don't frequent any book related websites, so I guess I wouldn't have any way of knowing.

If I'm being completely honest, the reason I liked reading ASOIAF is because I assume many of the tinfoil hat theories are true. GRRM likes mysteries and there are several blatant mysteries in the books, but I'm assuming that many of the fan-theorized mysteries are true, as well. They might not be.

So, I approached ASOIAF like you would mystery stories. I heard over and over again from people how they thought Quentyn's story was dumb because he just died in the end, and I thought, "He's dead?" The beginning of the book tells you burned bones tell you nothing; Quentyn was burned bones and his friends are very awkward when discussing exactly what happened.

Not the same thing. The story is enjoyable but tertiary. It’s the worldview that underlies it; that is where the importance lies.

The story of Moby Dick was based on an actual ship sunk by an actual white whale. It’s as real as the accounts are. It’s worth reading for its historical value.

Martin's writing is not good by any metric. It drags on with unnecessary detail that never goes anywhere, and often times makes apparent right off the bat that it doesn't go anywhere. The food description meme is absolutely true, and it's not the only thing that goes to waste. People remember the web of characters for the gems but they forget how many names and pieces are dropped for surface level world building when most of them have no hope of becoming relevant within the last two books. Conservation is one of the most important, constant, consistent elements of good writing.
Otherwise there's nothing impressive about his language. I don't want to touch on the issue of world building and linguistics here, but making your dialogue terse does not automatically make it good. There're virtually no lines in ASoIaF that hold up outside the context of the story, and they're fine in regards to telling the story, but that's the difference between good writing and good story telling. I'm willing to give him that keeping things ambiguous is a stylistic choice, but he has no talent for communicating information briefly.

GRRM's actually got a pretty poor grasp of history. He's like a /tg/ grognard who thinks making things grim make them more real when things are more complicated than that. There's a serious argument that LotR has a more realistic depiction of state despite being elves and dwarfs everywhere.
The ideal situation is that GRRM writes the whole plot and designs the cast and developments, then they hire other people on to fill out the blanks like dialogue and individual scenes.

the in world history of asoiaf is fantastic and surprisingly deep. GRRM is great at building histories

If you're going to ask people to prove a negative you can at least state a point instead of going "no you're wrong".
Story and writing are two completely different things. I read the books because I like the story, but while I'm willing to believe that Selmy's boner for Ashara might come back into play, we're likely never getting pay off for the pages spent on wolves feeding and tits in the air.
As it stands, it should be clear that it's ridiculous in the first place when the defense of a series is predicated on the books we'll never get. The series wouldn't hold up to any standard of good writing, and there're plenty of them to take. I'll give it credit where it's due, the story and characters are great regardless of the flaws, but it gets far too much undeserved love for where it don't. Just something as simple as Narnia is much more readable.
