I'd like to point out that while I'm not the original host, I'd be able to organize it in case he lost interest (if he is around, please contact me on the IRC channel which was used in previous tourney).
This time around we will use the Tournament function added recently, as well as share'able brackets (in form of google docs).
No matter if I'll be host or player, I'm still going to stream and commentate games.
I hope this edition will become more successful than the last, since more players will be familiarized with the rules and tournament environments.

Pon is pon, not ron. Was there an option for both? If you pick pon you just call the pon instead of declaring a win.

I wasn't at all. My had was leaning towards 7 pairs right in the beginning of the round, and that was an early discard. My draws after that were fucking insane.

Yeah, that means you're in furiten (one of your winning tiles is a previous discard), which means you can't win on discards from other players.

That's why then, having the 9 bamboo which could complete your hand in your discards puts you in furiten, which means you can't call ron. You can still win by tsumo though.

you can use Furiten rule to know what stuff it's safe to discard by watching your rival's discard pile

Before going for a specific Yaku, you have to make sure the tiles that makes you go into Tenpai and finish your hand are not in your own discard or Kan'd from another player. If that happens, you will be in furiten, so your hand will be incomplete unless you manage to swap the tiles you need.
