if we go by CTR's unlock conditions, you don't have to unlock anything at all aside from turbo track from adventure mode. and there was a code for that
characters will probably stay locked aside from penta but just pick any character from the same class if your favorite needs an unlock, or just play adventure for an hour

you start with 8 and there's 26 confirmed characters so far, you'll also start with no other karts or customization, so better get to work.
