Neku was an original character. DmC Dante was a new take on an old one. It's literally the only major difference.

It’s the way the fuck you was built up. Donte just throws it out whenever like a schoolyard kid so it has no effect. Nero had to deal with this man ripping off his arm, causing a shit load of chaos, and finding out that the guy in question was actually his dad. Combine that with his Devil Trigger activating and his glorious middle finger and it’s a recipe for success.

The first did it all the time at random like a schoolyard bully who thinks swearing makes you cool. The second did it after a ton of buildup where his uncle told him to get lost the father he never knew he had turns out to be a huge douche with a god complex and the two of them prioritizing their sibling rivalry over the literal fucking apocalypse. The first came off as edgy, the second felt cathartic after all the shit Nero went through.

Dante's investigating demonic activity in Tokyo and gets killed by the main villain, a Demon who's planning to take over the UG, when the guy shows up in Shibuya and starts wrecking shop. A large number of civilians are caught in the crossfire including Neku and friends. Given the abnormal situation Joshua uses the game to pit the players against the demons in order to prevent the UG from getting conquered. Neku gets a special timer and if he can beat the villain before time's up all of the players who died in the villain's Shibuya rampage get to come back to life. Neku ends up running into Dante before anyone he recognises and the two accidentally make a pact, and since they share the same objective they both try to find the villain, who's hidden somewhere in the UG. Neku teaches Dante about UG and the Reapers game while Dante teaches Neku about demons. In the end there are lessons about human connections and relationships, all that good stuff. Along with how different people deal with tragic circumstances given that the recent "Shibuya Disaster" is on quite a few people's minds when you scan them during the game. (1/2)

Gameplay is 3d action game roaming around damaged Shibuya (not apocalyptic or anything but the rampage the villain went on has had clear effects, like craters in Scramble, broken storefronts, stuff like that.) Dante and Neku have radically different playstyles and you can switch between them on the fly or have a 2nd player control one of them. Dante plays pretty typically like DMC while Neku depends on the pins you outfit him with. Dante maybe picks up a pin or two during the story that let him do some cuhrazy stuff but for customisation it's just Neku. Enemies have the double ended health bars from TWEWY, Neku damages from one end and Dante damages from the other. They're technically in different zones when fighting but for gameplay purposes you can see a transparent version of the other character during combat, even set up combos. Light puck's still a thing, could maybe turn into a way to get the player to switch characters during combat. You fight Noise/Demon hybrids the main villain cooked up. Threads, Pins Food, Brand awareness, Tin Pin Slammer, Scanning, Imprinting, maybe even Reaper Creeper make a comeback. You can do sidequests involving the other players dragged into the game due to the Shibuya Disaster and even reapers. Dante could pick up some new Devil Arms themed after Japanese myth and folklore, and meeting an eccentric pin designer who takes a liking to Dante could design new pins themed after him that'll let Neku try some of Dante's moves, with his own spin on them of course. If the pin is Class C you can hold up to three of the same pins.
If it is Class B, you can hold up to 2 copies.
If it is Class A, you can hold only 1 copy.
If the pin is a Reaper or Angel Class, you can only hold 1 of that class. Regardless of whether or not the pin is different or not.

Pretty much every single build in the world uses that. Not sure why you'd think anything otherwise.

Oh, I emulated it recently and I certainly learned to use other pins, but back then I basically rode those bitches solo with a slash pin, some fireball and a recovery one for when I inevitably ran out of lightning.

I see people build a bunch of synergy decks and do cuhrayzee shit while I slapped anything together with double Rook because they were the only thing that mattered. Also because Rook was THE noob pin.

Having recently played and beaten DMC, the story is still fresh in my mind. Donte had a hard life and learned that his mother was murdered by demons while his dad was imprisoned and tortured. He loses his memory and was raised in an orphanage run by demons and abused by demons until he kills them and goes on the run, hunting demons until Vergil finds him. Vergil is willing to sacrifice people to get what he wants but Donte goes out of his way to save the human girl who's been helping him. By the end when it's revealed Vergil only wanted Mundus out of the way so he could rule humans, Donte steps up to stop him and even tries to kill his own brother to let humans be free. He really does improve over the course of the game.

When even Neku opened up to others, the Composer knew that he had lost the game by betting on Neku. It's all about character growth.
