Actual 1991 boomer here. The games were so popular at the time that Sony had to go full damage control and create poor man's versions of Banjo. While one of them turned out pretty good(Crash) the other attempts led to such empty and soulless games like Spyro. This caused the N64's sales to rocket. Rare's reputation was spotless at the time, mind you, that Nintendo saw once again how talented they were and gave them the reigns of Donkey Kong 64.

The day of fate has finally come.

I'm playing Tooie for the first time right now and it's genuinely a really good game.
Kazooie was cute game when I played it years ago but this one feels like a step up in every way. The psuedo-Metroidvania structure helps set it apart from other 3D platformers, and makes the million abilities you obtain and sprawling worlds these games are known for make more sense. It's fun to just poke around this world and stumble on new places and levels, and it's easy to pick up on all the minigames because everything is using Banjos standard powers.

I put this off for years thinking itd be as dreadful as DK64 but I see why people genuinely love this series now. Sad I passed up on it as a kid.
