That's the absolute minimum
30-40 minutes if you're new. The heavier weights you get, the longer your rests between sets are. When you're starting out, you only need 30-60 seconds between sets and it goes much faster.

As a total beginner 30-45 minutes is fine. Depends on how many times a week you're going. (When I started I went 3 times a week.) If you're doing compound, full body exercises (like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses) more than 45 minutes as a beginner is more likely to hurt you then help.
You could still end up spending an hour if you do a light cardio warmup and stretch at the end. When you're starting off, the most important thing to focus on is getting into a regular routine. Intensity and duration can come later.

But that's not the point. It's not leveling up to get stronger. It's the rush you get from improving yourself: it's like the rush you get from leveling up. It's repetitive and a bit tedious, but the feeling you get from accomplishing your goals is amazing.

I'm in your same boat. when I actually counted my calories I found I'm only getting around 1400 a day, despite eating whatever I want whenever I want. You can supplement your diet with gainer shakes for a boost of 1000 calories or so. I did that for awhile and gained 25lb but the taste got unbearable for me so I've stopped for now. I seem to be maintaining the weight I got to though.

Unironically get tested for ADHD. Most people think it's just getting bad grades in school but it is so much more than that. I was sluggish and depressed on and off for a good 7 years. I tried antidepressants and therapy which only helped moderately. I did fine in school so I never thought of ADHD. Got tested and sure enough I met a lot of the criteria. Got on Ritalin and it has been a godsend.
I don't feel wired, I just feel what I imagine normal feels like. I think of something I want to do and do it when before it would be an arduous mental battle that usually ended with me lying back in bed.
People with ADHD have so much going on in the background of their minds that it just exhausts the body.
I would seriously go ask your doctor about getting tested. It's nothing I be ashamed of and you'll feel so much better if this turns out to be the reason.

Not entirely true. Diet is definitely the most important, but exercising fixes a lot of hormonal imbalances and helps give you much deeper sleeps, both of which significantly reduce the urge to over eat

Granted at a certain point your progress will definitely slow down. Depends on your own body, routine, and lifestyle. I managed to keep doing heavier squats for ages but right now I'm plateauing around 260-270 lbs at 5 reps. It's largely down to the fact that my diet has gotten shitty and my workouts have gotten shorter because I'm a wagie and my dumbass fucking company has had our whole department working overtime to cover for management's lazy, inept asses for like four months but I'm also accepting that progress past this point is going to be much more difficult period. I'm getting to a point where I'm happy with my body and I don't see myself gaining another 50 lbs like I did on my way to this goal.

I used to abuse the hell out of pineapple and orange juice, fruit smoothies, and blended my own juices 3-4 times a day. 2 years ago I went into the hospital with a critical bloodsugar of 670, and got diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic.
The scariest thing, is a few days ago, I forgot to take my insulin and I had the worst headache and lethargy at work. Thing is, I used to have these exact headaches and feelings back in high school (a good decade ago) and just thought it was my glasses, because it was mainly eyestrain. Now I realize I was most likely high bloodsugar back then from all the sugar shit I ate and didnt know it. I effectively tortured my body just by having what I *thought* was healthy for me over soda and fatty foods. For all I know I could have been showing signs of it ten years ago, You all could too if you eat the same way. Stop it now before it gets worse user, you don't want this hell i've been through.

Portion control is key user. you still need to eat less then the daily intake, and burn off more. This doesnt mean excercise or lift, this means do something other than lay in bed and sit around. i mean it's never really a bad idea. high protein intake enhances muscular hypertrophy and repair, and there is some evidence that it also reduces the effects of detraining. there are no real downsides until you reach insane levels of intake and even at that point it's only bad for people with kidney issues. high protein foods are also generally filling so they help for people who need to lose weight

Count your daily calories intake and calculate how much you can eat if you want to lose weight. Unless you have some medical reason, you're going to lose weight for sure. I've finally started losing weight this year, dropping 18kg's in 5 months with just watching my daily calorie intake and very light exercise occasionally.
Honestly I still eat like a fat slob on most days, but I just know when to stop stuffing my face. You can just sit at the computer whole day and lose weight if you take in less calories than what you burn passively. Get a phone app that you can use to track your calories and do it properly for a year. You'll definitely lose weight.

what you're describing is DOMS and only occurs the first or first few times you do work you're not used to
if you feel sore it means you're doing it right. you're going to be the most sore when you first start lifting because your baby muscles aren't used to it.
lift until you're sore, then rest until you're not sore anymore. drink lots of water during your downtime. when you're no longer sore, work out some more until you're sore again. rinse and repeat. the soreness is your muscles tearing from strenuous exercise, they're supposed to do that. let them rebuild before working out more or you won't gain as much.

Its probably to do with the fact that you feel really shit if you don't exercise regularly, get used to that feeling and assume thats what life is supposed to feel like. Obviously life is much harder and complex than a video games but video games are still based on real life. I can't speak for you or even say if you're depressed or not, but personally I think my depression is because of the lazy attitude I went through my younger life with, always "I'll do it later" or "I can't be bothered" with everything, this just led me to being lazier and lazier with everything in my life to the point where I think everything takes too much effort, but I say fuck meds or therapy/psychology.

Diet helps with losing weight but Muscles do help with increasing metabolism especially when you are resting and not doing anything.
The more muscles you have, the faster your metabolism when you are at rest and not doing anything.
Metabolism slows down as you age which answers the question why you could eat so much as a teenager and not gain too much weight compared to an adult.

Don't know if placebo effect but before I started taking Vitamin D3, I used to be a midnight owl.
Vitamin D3 started making me feel tired and sleepy again at night, forcing me to start sleeping at a normal schedule instead of internet browsing too late at night.

You probably ate more to compensate for that loss of sugar intake, and were probably less concerned about overall portion control because you knew you were doing the right thing in cutting calorie drinks.
This is why I hate "just do this one trick, bro" advice. It's never just one thing, you need to evaluate your entire system. Cutting liquid calories is a really helpful step though, and it legitimately is enough to get some people on track for losing weight, but yeah they still need a net negative calorie intake overall

It took me a while to adjust.
There are medical methods to achieve a proper sleeping schedule like sleep doctors and sleeping centers for people who really need help.
Never went to one myself but you basically sleep in a room with stuff placed on you and the room is capable of pitch black darkness and the sleep doctor adjusts the lighting to help you start sleeping normally because you finally get discharged.
Airplane pilots seem to seek these kind of services a lot once they quit their job.

for me I could never eat much all through my life as a kid and a teenager, it was rare for me to ever finish my dinners til I was around 19/20, now I eat like the fattest fucker it's ridiculous. The thing I could eat fuckloads of without gaining weight when I was a teen was chocolate and sweets, I fucking love chocolate but now I just can't eat it as much as I used to, I just don't feel the need for it as much as I used to, and now it makes me feel sick and stuff, I used to be able to eat a whole block to myself, now I might eat one or 2 pieces off a block every couple days or something.

well I do have coke or juice every once in a while, like I go to my mums for dinner once a week and I'll always have a can of coke or 2, or some juice, or maybe I'll have something like that with dinner here sometimes or if I go to buy food out or something. Otherwise I just drink water most of the time, not even just for the sake of losing weight, it makes me feel more refreshed and better in the mornings and stuff.

I get what you're saying, but I mean my body has seemed to have actually adjusted to being up when it's dark and sleeping when it's light, even if I went to a place where I fit properly with the timing I would probably just revert back to staying up heaps late again.
At 290 your knees are simply fucked because of all the strain they have to bear from your everyday activities. I had a friend who at 45 developed arthritis because she is ~250lb at 5'3.
Long term health: Lose weight. Preferably by swimming or any cardio exercise that doesn't require smashing on the knees.
Muscle: Squats. Either by your own body weight or weights. As you get better balance, you can work your way up into pistol squats.
As others here have said though, you gotta look at your diet because exercise is only 5% of the equation to getting in shape.

Highschools should have both Morning Recess and Lunch Recess and PE should be mandatory for all 4 years of highschool.
I remember most of my school days as I grew up was sitting in a classroom all day and only walking to the next classroom every 1 hour.
No more recess and lunch break was pretty short with no time for a decent basketball game.
I lift so that I can survive the impending race war, not for fun.

You can still get up now and hit the gym. Nothing is ever too late to get back into shape.
The reason why you could do that is because your strength vs weight was in your muscles favor, but as your body grew the strength/weight-balance shifted.

I do not have one.
You can do your own research on a good gym routine. A gym trainer is also a good way to ease yourself into a gym routine. A gym trainer is also more hands on, showing you technique and form.
I didn't have money at the time and just researched my own routine. I was also luckily enough to have a buff ass friend that helped me on my form and technique.
Eating healthily involves eating lots of protein
If you mean protein powder supplements then no, you don't need them. They can just help make it easy to get protein with little calories. Especially WPI
Look up a starting strength program, squats/benches/deadlifts/pullups etc. Full body exercises are best. I really recommend getting someone to show you the ropes with these, because you can easily hurt yourself if your form sucks. If you have some cash the easiest way is to get a personal trainer, just make sure that they're okay with teaching you what you want to learn and not pushing their own shit on you too much. Focus on learning good form so that you're not dependent on the trainer.
Most people can cover their nutritional needs by simple eating intelligently, eat your meat and oats, and increase portion-size slighty.
Get a scale and weigh yourself every morning.
Take the time needed to learn about proper form and don't be afraid to ask at the gym, however be wary of incompetence as it can quickly result in injury, seek multiple sources.
Protein-supplements are not needed but can make the going a lot easier.
Not him, but I had 3 friends attempt to join the highschool basketball team. Only 1 ever got a chance to play. The other 2 were permanent benchwarmers until they eventually quit.

Did they still not go to practice to stay in shape? It sucks to be a bench warmer but there are plenty of other activities that schools offer that won't get you to bench warm. For instance wrestling or cross-country.

This was back in my highschool says so my memories weren't very clear but I just remembered how discouraged my friends were and they ended up not joining any other sport team in highschool.
My highschool only cared about football and basketball and didn't care about any other sport teams in school. All the attention was always on basketball or football.
