Age of Empires at E3

I assumed it was going to be cave man age to the naval era (basically 1-3 combined)

Am I the only one who really loved AOE3? Yeah the home city / card deck / treasures mechanics were a bit of a mess, but the setting was max comfy and there was a much more satisfying diversity of units and abilities than AOE2. Plus watching your canons literally blow big chunks out of enemy buildings and ships or blow troops 200ft backwards was brilliant.

AOE3 is my favorite. The map sizes always were a bit small for my taste (maybe it was a limitation of hardware at the time considering the graphics quality/physics, etc) but I still had a ton of fun with it.

So what's so cool about AoE2 DE? What makes it different from the one currently on steam? Is it going to be in fully 3D like AoE1 DE?

if AOE3 had random maps, no home cities, and not tried to copy WC3 with the "heroes" it would have been the best RTS of all time

I feel like it could be the best game to benefit from a DE. AOE2 was such a perfect rounded experience, so I can't see what they would add other than the same stuff HD did and 3D graphics. But AOE3 has always had these little niggles for people which didn't leave the game fundamentally broken but are very fixable in a remake.

Nah. The only problem is that AoE2 had longer legs so today, most of the active AoE community is that of AoE2 people, and those people shat on anything that isn't AoK.
They shat on Vietnamese for sticking with AoE1.
They shat on AoM for runing the game by going 3D.
They shat on AoE3 by ruining the game through the different era and less melee focus.
They even shat (though deservedly) on AoE2HD for having shit everything and stuck with Woobly and no expansions for years.

These games require much more time and budget than a mid-sized studio can afford. Case in point, Empire Earth 3 and what a shitheap that was precisely because no matter the intentions, the budget/time was simply not there.

It's a lot easier these days - the real trouble is breaking through all the other shovelware crap and getting exposure, but if it has a name behind it it wouldn't be an issue. A decently talented mid-sized team could make a pretty decent EE clone.

Age of Empires 4 should go back to prehistoric-bronze age-classical antiquity eras. There hasn't been many RTS in those. Fuck medieval and modern.

Whatever era they choose to represent the game will still be made by Relic, so don't give in to hype.

EE3 didn't even have pathfinding mate. I don't know what sort of retarded idiots you've been listening to, but the game's design (which wasn't Satrcrafty, it was Empire Earth crossed with AoM) was not in any way the real issue.

That game was already made. It's called Cossacks (2001, up your and your "tech limit" bullshit that so many imbeciles spout online), it's a great game but it's not Age of Empires.
If you remove the pop cap, the economy of exponential villager growth turns the game into something completely different.

I only hated the Titan units themselves. Thankfully they can be toggled off now.

What I like about AOE is that you always reach a point in the game where you hit the population limit and establish the most efficient villager-military ratio, at which point you can largely stop concentrating on your economy other than tech upgrades etc. and focus on offence/defence.

That's something I hated about AoK, constantly having to pull yourself out of battle to replenish farms.

this is great and terrible at the same time, games become stalemates where you keep making units and sending them to their deaths without any strategy whatsoever.

Company of Heroes and Men of war had the best ideas for resources, time based with artificial limits (victory points)

Not true. The team responsible for the expansion was not the team who did the AoMEE release. Skybox Labs did the Age of Mythology Extended Edition release and fucked everything up. Forgotten Empires are the team who have been working to balance and update the game.

It’s like as if they decided to look at AoE and said that they want to make a bigger version of it, but never actually realized what made AoE II good and ended up making a game with tons of features and shit, yet completely lacking the fine-tuned balance and gameplay of AoE II. I just reinstalled AOE3 for the hell of it and played a skirmish. It's still super fun imo, though the AI difficulty is all kind of fucked. I'm a pretty shitty RTS player but I managed to beat it on 'moderate' in under 10 minutes. I can imagine if you were a skilled player if you wanted any kind of challenge at all you'd need multiple AI teams on the hardest difficulty against you.
