If you join the Stormcloaks they give you sort of a cool set of officer's armor. Imperials literally just give you a set of plate armor like you can buy anywhere. Other than that it just changes who's jarl in half the cities and allows you to move straight into the final missions instead of a break where you sit down with Tulius and Ulfric to divide the province

My only issue with this is just how hard it is to get the redguards to open up about their (claimed) motives. The Thalmor are popular with literally no one in skyrim. Why do they have to keep their reason hidden if it's something that would make 99% of people more than willing to help them track her down? You practically have to pry their fingernails off to get them to actually tell you why they want her.

But I just chalk this up to gameplay purposes. They intentionally made the redguards not tell you, for no other reason than that they'd look more sinister than they actually are, in order to have the conflict of who to trust be more justified. Hamfisted writing, but whatever.

Depending on how successful the thalmor is at breaking up the empire, they may unwittingly be creating the next one to defeat them. I can see Skyrim allying with Hammerfell if the Stormcloaks win. At the point the Empire would just be High Rock and Cyrodil. Break them up and the Bretons would definately be smart enough to ally with their neighbours against the thalmor. Cyrodil is up shit creek unless they officially say they're done with the empire and will ally with the other provinces as equals instead of rulers. The result is a coalition of united, self governing nations instead of an empire encompassing all nations, which is essentially just as strong as the old empire when it fights together.

Empire got fucked in the Great War because the Thalmor outsmarted them due to the Empire's intelligence networks being beyond retarded. Look at what happened to the Thalmor's -main- army once they had to fight a standing army in an actual skirmish, they got absolutely decimated. There is no “first house” you can get them in any order. That being said the Jarl of Falkreath will be the most proactive of the theee and send you a letter to run an errand for him then you can buy a plot of land from him.
