The characters all feel "basic", and not as in the writing term, but in the way you would describe someone who in real life who is "basic". This is antithetical to how anime is normally written. While Western art tends towards the realistic, the East tends towards the opposite end. Anime is idealistic. Anime characters are not real, and have never been written to feel real. One way of putting it is that anime is made for people who don't want to see real people.
Basically, it's a Western game in tone and feeling, but it lies to you with anime aesthetics and culture references. Some people have found that they dig that sort of meshing of Western and Eastern styles, but I find it frustrating. Had it used a different art style (and laid off the memes), I wouldn't have disliked the concept as much.
But the game is getting a collab with GFL so I have tolerate it anyways.
