I thought they wanted to re-translate it? I remember a thread on Yea Forums mentioning how its getting a new, reworked translation that isnt ridden with bugs and text that doesn't fit the screen. Whatever the fuck happened to that? Did the project die?
I have been dying to replay this game since I last played it in 2012 and I waited for the re-translation. Is that even still coming?

No it's in progress and in the final QA phase if I am not mistaken. Fixing rare word wrapping issues and such.
They even made a Steam page for the game, but then Valve banned it from their platform. Should still most likely be released within a month or two. I hope.

The translation was almost finished Q4 last year or something I think but don't quote me on that. It's been in beta / bug fix hell since then. The translation is done.
There have been posts detailing the various bugs and such that they've been dealing with. With screenshots and such to illustrate. I can't find it though, I've only ever followed this stuff second hand from the posts of other anons.
Doing QA for VNs already takes forever and this is one with actual gameplay and tons of events with non-obvious triggers and prerequisites. Combine that with the tiny budget and team size of a VN localization company and what do you expect?
I bet they are having too much fun playtesting it so they don't have time to actually release it.

They need to test quite a handful of scenarios to make sure the thing doesn't break. One small line of text can fuckup quite a bit.

This, the QA is what's been taking most of the time rather than the translation. The translators already moved on to the later games ages ago.
Being introduced to Rance with 7 was spoiling me. 5D and 6 both have fucking terrible gameplay in entirely different flavours even if the writing and characters are still entertaining.

Arunaru finished translation it and moved on to Rance 9 and X. Editing took a while, then beta, and now we're in post beta fixs. Considering how Mangagamer likes to do releases, it will probably be released during Anime Expo
How far is Quest and any other translations happening?
If you want something like Sengoku Rance you should most likely play Kichikou Rance which is the same genre. And while Kichikou admittedly does lack some the improvements and innovations of Sengoku, Kichikou is on a much grander scale and has more content.
You could also try out Daibanchou even though it's not Rance.
I tried Daibanchou and got annoyed by the hidden turn limit and vague event triggers.

Quest Magnum and even IX have been fully translated for almost a year now. Maybe you'll see them released after 2025.

However, their QA time isn't really a manpower issue on the tester side, I think the problem is that they have like 4 programmers doing everything.

No it isn't. It's fucking terrible. It's a shitty knockoff of Sengoku Rance with awful shallow characters, horrible art, a joke of a story, and worst of all completely braindead gameplay. I activated every single hard trigger and everything except Russia was a breeze while Russia was fucking retarded to get through. Maybe Gold might eventually fix some of the gameplay and story issues but it won't fix the terrible art.
Id love my husband rance's games to get on switch since nekopara did and nintendo isnt kneecaping lewd devs like sony but its only a dream
I have actually played it. Thought my saves got corrupted just as I had finished it.
It had okay combat which was bit easy compared to Rance, but I never felt like reading side mission dialogue which there was fuckloads.
still waiting for 8 years later. good bored and decided to play rance 2 and 3 and they were alright.

No, its just gonna be bug free, have an actual good translation, wont have random japanese names, text will actually fit the text window and such.
Though there might be some gameplay changes in the form of bug fixes like Arunaru did in his KR translation.
Its a finished fucking game, how long does it take 4 programmers to fix it? 4 man teams have developed full fucking games from scratch in the timeframe of less than 2 years.
4 programmers across the entire company working on all their games. Meaning 1 programmer doing multiple projects, Rance 7 being one of them.

Yeah same. I enjoyed the gameplay and characters but I felt if I wasn't using a guide 24/7 I just didn't stand a chance, and even then the AI tried it's best to fuck me. It was too stressful.
