That doesn't mean they paying X dollars for exclusivity, it means if the games fails to reach X dollars worth of sales Epic will cover the difference. Fair enough having a physical copy but when each install demanded you find the CD key included with your copy just to be able to finish the install and the extra layer of protection requiring you to have the disc inserted just to launch the game really became a pain in the ass, especially when the essential files for the game to run already were on the PC itself, even worse if the game itself arbitrarily required you to switch discs midgame for no reason at all. It's no wonder why people didn't want to bother with that bullshit and started using cracks instead.

Lots of the people getting it are factorio players so it spread via word of mouth. There's not many games like factorio, and they always wanted a 3D version of it, so despite epic and the drama around it the game was always guaranteed some modicum of success as long as they didn't royally fuck up.
