So how far along is this game? I hear universally glowing reviews, but I don't want a game that is like only 10-20% complete no matter how good it is. When is the estimated release date for the finished game?
Around a year from now. There isn't enough content yet, so I wouldn't get it unless you were a fan of the first or have money lying around.
Keep it on your radar, though. It's pretty damn fun.
I got it day one and played it a bunch for about 2 weeks. I am waiting for the next update to enjoy it more so I dont get burnt out. Getting it early lets you unlock shit as it comes out but if you wanna wait then buy it later.

in the first killing floor you could buy a bunch of guns and dump them around the map, so you'd have plenty of ammo. then the devs killed it saying the really slow and ancient machines couldn't keep up. but almost right after the devs released killing floor 2

In response to the OP itself, ror2 does a really good job of balancing your control over the game's difficulty between both player skill and level randomness.
Every run seems viable if you play your cards right, and there's a lot to learn + satisfying combat there's that too.

The games fine but just like ROR1, it's played best in spurts. I don't feel like putting in the time unless I can actually beat the game and get all the content, but I'll be back.

No? How's the wall bad? It finishes off tough enemies, freezes them, provides decent crowd control, procs. If you get that red item which gives you more charges you can just spam the whole battlefield with walls. It's a high IQ skill, that's why you don't like it probably.
I love artificer but I suck at using wall, please don't get defensive for no reason. If anything I'd like to learn how to use it.
There's not much to it really. Finishing tough elites is very valuable. If you place it so enemy will go right into ice again when he unfreezes - you can remove some dangerous golems or elder lemurians from a fight for a while. Just throwing it in the crowd helps a lot when you're swarmed since at least couple of enemies will be frozen.
If anything, the flamethrower sucks because range is limited and it's dangerous to get close in later loops.
He implied on the blog that the changes are much more significant than that.

Mul-T is boring and his effectiveness fall off is too apparent once you understand how the game works
Engie is fun times but its almost too easy
Huntress is fine except not being able to consistently focus targets because of the auto aim is tiresome
Arti always feels like more effort than its worth since half the items you would want to work with her abilities don't work properly if at all
Merc is good times but makes me physically tired faster than anyone else
Mando is a good boy but I'm itching for someone who's shooting consists of more than hit everything when its off cooldown
