This was pretty obvious to everyone involved the second they announced it. Larianiggers are so cancerous to the RPG genre that Deadfire suffered because of it.

Fortunately, Sawyer was a tricky jew about it. Deadfire technically had "full voice acting" but there were millions of non voice acted dialogue in the unnamed NPCs, the story board sequences, etc, and Deadfire was much better for it. There was no narrator cringe.

But yeah, Larian absolutely did a number on isometric RPGs. Imagine if Larian had the audacity and courage to admit all the millions of mistakes they make for the genre in their post-mortem the same way based Sawyer does.

It was 100% coop shens. Everyone I k ol bought it just for that reason, and even then none of us finished it. It's so painfully slow and unbalanced. Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.

It isn't a sequel but it is still set in Baldur's Gate and follows the lore and events of the previous games.

We don't know what it was like but they wouldn't have got the licence to one of the most guarded licenses in video games. People have been trying hard to get the BG license to years, if they have given it to Larian then the game is what a BG game should be.

Well Baldur's Gate series is set around 1368 DR and the setting as a whole has advanced over a century past that. You'd think they'd want to set the story in more 'recent' times figuratively speaking. That would preclude most characters appearing aside from special kinds of cameos or elves. Furthermore it would be hard to bring back old characters and not establish a canon in doing so.

I would prefer they just leave it behind all together, advance the time to the 1480s or so and do something wholly new set in Baldur's Gate/Sword Coast. But you're probably right about how they'll approach it.

It is always aggravates me how you have this huge sprawling fantasy setting in Faerun/FR but every game due to legacy titles wants to be crammed into the same couple of places.

Take most of the good parts of older systems and then simplify it a bit for newcomers. Its not nearly as crunchy, but it's still fun.

Larian's engine is impressive and fully 3D, and newcomers to gaming always want that new shiny graphixxxx not to mention Larian's support for modding, whereas Beamdog and Obsidian does not.

Larian has proven they are good at basic combat for CRPG's but their writing is shit. Baldur's Gate has always been story telling first combat second. That is why Icewind Dale exists for combat chads.

Plus the only info we have is Larian is working on it and some vague shit. Nothing to be hyped for yet. Not to mention we have known for over a week that this was coming.

Baldur's Gate has always been the "balanced" series. Fallout, Arcanum, and PS:T were the games that appealed to people who wanted to do pacifist runs and make role-playing decisions during quests.

BG tried to tell a compelling main quest but it's not about choices and combat was way more of an emphasis than a game like PS:T.

I'm late gen X, my first RPG was Quest of the Avatar on C64 and I bought BG1 on release. There's plenty of us still here.

Thank Christ it was Larion instead of Beamdog. I know Beamdog have been trying to get their own iteration of BG3 off the ground for awhile now, would've instantly dropped it if they were the devs based off what I've seen in SoD. I'll at least give Larion's work a go considering they'll likely respect the source material instead of cramming socjus down your throat.

The act of using games as political mouthpieces, ensures whatever subject you are dealing with (Mainly character traits and setting) are seen as canvases for mere check boxes rather than genuine and natural artistic expression. That's why almost all PC characters feel so empty, or at the very least have aspects to them that add absolutely nothing to their character like being gay for no reason.

That's good, most of the time it's done it's overt and cringey due to characters being politicized for the sake of being politicized. I think the reason why so many people are so sensitive to small hints of PC culture are because it's usually an indication that its not an isolated case and it's a sign that theres going to be bad writing in the game. It's also usually sign that the publisher doesn't acknowledge that they are making games, not political commentary, but how much so depends on the specific developer. And when all you have are check boxes, devs only have to meet the bare minimum required of what they are working on. You can see this in a lot of AAA developers.
