During the Brawl to Pre-Phil Spencer Twitter comment regarding Smash 4's DLC ballot, Banjo was a character that was never ever considered because... well, he's an Xbox character, that wouldn't work because that's like asking for Master Chief. But to see how far Banjo has gotten from that day to now is quite amazing actually, a unanimous "no" to a "Hey, that's not a bad idea. He could work!" Probably the greatest underdog story in Smash history and if he were to get in, it would be the most special crossover in gaming history. It's like if Nathan Drake made a cameo in a Metroid game. If it was Steve, sure, it would also be special... but Steve and Minecraft is everywhere already and to me, it would be a "oh, obvious pick because it's popular" and that's not Smash Bros. to me, Smash Bros. is the celebration of gaming, new and old, they don't shill to characters just because they are relevant in modern games. Banjo, Master Chief, hell, even Rash, they would make a big impact and make history of what video games are.

I think that rumor came about because there was an Amiibo listing and people thought it was Smash, turns out the Amiibo was real... but it was the first Non-Smash Non-Nintendo Amiibo, so people jumped the gun too quickly. He does appear in ultimate as an assist trophy though!
