that's the thing, no one wants any alteration to vanilla or tbc but literally no one would argue that those additions to wrath would be great, making it a far more interesting prospect for a relaunch than tbc. It ain't gonna happen because blizz would never divide the playerbase between classic, and give you the option of tbc or wrath, OR miss out on tbc fan money to make the ultimate wrath experience.

The art style shift was definitely in MoP. Worgen might have had a gay starting zone but compare their models to Pandas and it's really obvious that they were from seperate time periods. Much of t11/12 looked closer to Wrath style than MoP. Also stuff like Twilight Highlands and Deepholm were plenty "complex" you just had a flying mount

According a metric on how many characters are regularly being played, FFXIV had about 600k active users last month.

Remember, a game being as unfathomably huge as WoW is simply not the norm with MMOs. It's not a genre that pulls most gamers in because grinding is inherently not fun.

It should be noted that ffxiv is currently in the lul between expansions and the next one which is quite hyped up releases in less than a month.
If it has 600k players now, it's gonna have a hell of a lot more than that next month.

My point is that WoW is an anomaly and people should not use it as a metric to judge the life of other MMOs. People always made fun of the "WoW only has 5m subs right now!", but the fact is no other MMO in the world could even touch that number. That's how far ahead they were.

Good video for anyone who hasn't played D2 extensively and wants to understand why Diablo3 was hated universally by veterans or anyone with functioning brain cells.

Before wow, many mmos were happy to have 5-6 figure populations. Mmorpgs tend to be the prime example of "too big too fail" mindsets ever since WoW came out.

Still though, there's nothing on the horizon besides Pantheon. All companies including Korean ones (which were all shit after Lineage 2) are jumping ship, mostly to mobile gaming.

Hell FFXI is still around officially and it only has like 4k players. The servers must cost so little to run that there's no reason to shut them down.
