It's not that hard. Consider some things:
Hell is not time limited, fuck the clock and take your time.
There are many health pickups, especially when you first drop into the third area and the enemies spawn from the top right, make sure you kill them where they drop hearts in a safe place.
Heavy Press is easy, just spam a bunch of rockets upward and kill him in literal seconds before jumping out of the way.
Ballos's first form is very predictable, you shouldn't be taking any damage on it.
It's easy to avoid damage on the second form, too, but not that big a deal if you take some.
Remember that you (should) have a health potion on you.

It's been years since I've tried Ballos for the last time. The problem wasn't that I couldn't get to him. It was the tedium of going through the Sanctuary everytime I've failed on him.
and checking out youtube and realizing that he had 5 phases, (if I recall correctly), and I only made it to the second phase, didn't really help either.
I still have the savefile with the spur and potion at the start of the Sanctuary but I don't know if I really wanna do this to myself.

I think that's fine, the problem is the parts of the game where there is a lot of trivial bullshit inbetween the save point and the boss fight. Monster X and the first Core fight are fairly egregious examples, it was painful having to trek for a minute or two every time you wanted to re-attempt the boss fight on a 3HP run.

The game originally had a very different story about a frog and a cat who were in love and seemed to be fairly far along, but for some reason it didn't work out and that concept was scrapped in favor of the salaryman setting.

He had a manga about the frog and the cat years before that (ame, she shows up in most of his games).
It's always possible he's saving a proper Ame game for later.

It's more that he got stuck in a creative slump when he worked on the game alone and didn't work on the game for over a year, and when he came back to it he decided to scrap it and redesign it together with a new person he could delegate most of the level design to so he could focus on working on the engine and bugs.

Spur isn't that broken, only helps for the beginning when your weapons have no xp (but instead you can use the nemesis or blade)

The problem with the Core on 3HP is that there's a particular spot you have to hang out on to ensure his bullets fly at a certain angle, because if you don't you will be fucked whenever it's high water and the currents start pushing you away. Once you figure out your positioning the fight becomes fairly trivial.

Yeah, I had the health pot. It was a sweaty summer day. A lot more people have killed him than I thought, I think the alien medal is from killing the fish boss without getting hit iirc and even less people have that even though hes super easy.

Snake is the top tier speedrun weapon though, you can activate the eye gates through walls way ahead of time and just plow through everything without stopping. Blade, Nemesis and the missiles are much better for raw DPS than the Spur anyway.
