I used to think like you and started reading the manga in order to piss off the fujo fanbase, trying to find asspulls, shitty writing moments and such to rub off to their face how shitty their mainstream shojo was. I ended up enjoying it a lot, and while there were major mistakes in the writing like (spoilers incoming) everyone acting retarded around Armin, him not dying instantly from a 50+ meter fall, Levi being almost invincible constantly and killing the stakes whenever he apppears, Ymir not knowing which team to support due to Isayama writing himself in a corner since he probably didn't want her to reveal details about Marley too early, the manga is actually a stellar work and you can see how not only the author improved his drawing skills but also how he left all these little breadcrumbs of foreshadowing throughout the story. Add to that the nice character development from the MC, the criticism of propaganda or the whole ideological opposition between Eren and Zeke going on, etc. SnK got mainstream but for the wrong reasons and I expect the 3 following episodes to act as a pleb filter for the masses

The Eldians obtained the power of the titans from somewhere and used it to build a huge empire and dominate the FUCK out of other territories. Somewhere along the line, they supposedly got BTFO and the king surrendered or something. The king then moved all the Eldians into a big island (which is where the first part of the series takes place), built giant walls with titans and brainwashed all of his subjects. The people that want to kill the Eldians want them to repay the sins of their ancestors.

I know what I'm about to say will sound extremely cliche but SnK is far from your average battle shonen, in fact I'd say it even plays and subverts its tropes pretty well. Everything post chapter 86 is really enjoyable to follow and made every chapter before that point look like a prologue, it shows that Isayama wanted to tell the story of the current arc from the beginning.
You should look past the mainstream reputation it has gotten over the years and give it a try
