Thank God Obsidian isn't behind this. Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.

Long story short: they didn't fix jack shit from the original games, they added unneeded stuff like obnoxious characters and overpowered characters kits (I know, the original games already had some other overpowered characters kits, but it was more than a decade before), and finally, SoD.
Personally, for me it was more like the fact they came outta nowhere more than a decade later from the latest games, after the old community was still trying their best to make such a good (but old, goddamn old) game survive 'till those days, and did the old skit of "we're here to save BG! Leave everything to us! We're the leaders now!" ... That was unneeded, unwanted for. And all those bugs and shit and forgotten stuff because of an early release both games had almost 15 years before? Still there. The mods and fixes were still needed. BUT! But they had to be re-worked, because the standard mods and fixes didn't work on the EE games.
Same bullshit also happened with IWD and P:T.

The solution to this is to just not have garbage random fodder encounters. RTWP has no reason to exist, except that it enables the devs laziness. Instead of crafting somewhat interesting encounters as in Divinity OS 1&2, which generally require some level of strategy to overcome, they can just spam shitty random enemies at you that you can let the AI kill that make you feel like your accomplished something when all you did was allocate stat points. Outside of the games, D&D combat is turn based and it works. There's no fundamental reason why it cant work in a game so long as the game is designed around this.

Because it's the fate of BG3 who could have gone to the only devs so far who have proven capable of inhereting it in that they'd make something true to its roots.
Larian might make a good game out of BG3 but it won't be BG.

I fucking said it. I enjoyed all 3 those game, but for me, that had no shit in common with their own sagas. It was actually a good thing for RE, but not so good for the other 2 series. But that's just my opinion.

It just works. And it changes the way you play the game since you cannot save and load, accidently picking flowers in Ald Ruhn got me shitting my pants because i got thrown out of House redoran and you only got two shots at that.
Also, youll rely far more on the hotkeys and that makes morrowind combat actually engaging.

I actually love turn-based games. FFX was actually my favourite FF, if we consider only the gameplay. But this just can't be applied with BG and the likes. The RTWP is much more hard to handle, and I want hard in my BG. Tactics and SCSI+II were my favourite mods, and I sure wasn't the only one enjoying the hell outta those, back in the day.

Well, I also never used it with in a "serious" campaign, or at all. Just for a few characters for fun, or in speedruns.
I actually remember using it "seriously" just once, about a decade ago or more, when I played the whole saga in multiplayer with 2 friends. One of them wanted to play as a human Kensai dualwielder later turned Mage (the old classic), but, since there were no Katanas ready at the very beginning of the game (or even later), and since they were also terribly pricey, we just saved his character with both a Katana and a Wakizashi ready. That's all, that was the only time I remember using that "cheat" in a "serious" campaign.

And to answer your other question, there was a "fix" or mod that "adjusted" the weapons proficency a little, like putting similar weapons in the same category, instead of the "random" original one from BG2. Like, Katanas and Wakizashis under the same "Katana Proficency" instead of Scimitars, the Morningstars under "Mace Proficency" instead of Flails, Ninja-tos under "Short Swords Proficency" instead of Scimitars again, and a few others like that. It made more sense for us, really. But he didn't use the other Wakizashi for long, 'cause I remember those few "special", or "named" Ogre Magi from the wilderness all had a magical Katana +1 in the BGT version we played, one of them (the most dangerous one IIRC) even had a Katana +2 (which, in BG1, was pure gold)

Because there weren't any. Katanas and the likes only appeared in BG2. You had to play BGT (Trilogy) to have the standard stuff from the second game appear even in the first one. It was good because that way, you could play the first game with the second game's graphics and animations. Which was a big step from the first game, truth be told.

Yep. Motherfucking Celestial Fury. One of my friend's final weapons. The other one was the Crom Faeyr. Yep, he dualwielded a katana and a warhammer. I also remember another good katana, from one of the 2 special merchants available at the very start of BG2, which only sold special and very expensive weapons and other stuff. That katana was perfect for a warrior/mage, because it added extra bonus spells for mages. He used it until we forged the Crom Faeyr.

Running around as Kensai with Katana in BG2 was aesthetic af.

I was a half-orc berserker. sword+shield in BG1, dualwield swords in BG2. Favourite weapons Blackrazor + Spectral Brand. My other friend was an elf archer. He was uber-strong in BG1, but turned normal/low tier in BG2 because there was no real OP Bows or Crossbows in BG2 nor in ToB, I think he used that fire crossbow +5 and that bow with infinite +4 arrows by the end of the saga. But he did a real good thing with his melee weapon choice, he picked up Halberds, and he could use Wave and Ravager, 2 of the best weapons in the game. He had less attacks than a fighter with melee weapons, but still enough to kick ass. Then we picked Imoen, Viconia and Edwin. I remember giving the Staff of the Magi to Edwin, and the Flail of Ages +3 (later +5) to Viconia... Imoen, I can't remember. I think we also turned her into a dualwielder. Maybe we gave her that sword that raises your STR to 22? I don't really remember.

Me too. Overall, I hated all the free movement effects. There were also the ring, that +2 great sword from the spider woods in BG1, and the potions of free movement. Everytime I needed to use it, I also had to forget about my haste.
