Play DOS 1 first. The gameplay changes made in 2 can make 1 feel different in a anoying way. The story isn't that good in either game so pick your poison. The world building and gameplay make up for the 'decent' story.

I have a spot for Divinity II; was a rather fun and interesting game and looked good. Dragon Commander was weird, but I loved the whole blend they did on that, it was refreshing that not many other games did. Larian is pretty cool.

It actually has meaningfull status effects for one thing. Decaying is a great effect, nothing new to games, but new to CRPGs.
Having mutually exclusive status effects is another big one.
Having high ground increase your damage and reach makes archery far more fun and positioning more important.
Melee characters actually can support casters and ranged characters in OS, rather than beeing a speedbump that monsters run right past.
And yes, enviroment effects are a good thing and i have no idea why they havent been in earlier.
