Well to be fair, neither has Xenoblade. Nor Kid Icarus.
It has more to do with promoting games rather than what they've accomplished.

Shantae is a niche series, and she should be happy to get a spirit in the game.

Ever play Pharoah Rebirth? It's actually Shantae done better. In that game, the rabbit guy attacks with his ears like Shantae does, but thing is, he's got more moves than that. When he jumps and attacks he does a spin attack.

That's the big problem with the Shantae games. it's made by people who obviously love games, and are trying their hardest to ape their favorites, but they lack the technical directors who can pull off great gameplay.

Also, I played Popful Mail recently, and thhe story/setting/tone is basically Shantae. Mail IS Shantae to a tee. And the gameplay is better.

Shovel Knight is mostly a blank character, he defintely has some aspects of a character, his lve for Shield Knight, his willingness for bad puns toward the grumpy frog man, and his chilvarous nature and chatter with the Order of No Quarter, but it all pales in comparison to what Shantae has shown throughout her games.
