Generally I enjoy deceptive characters. Those that can move more freely then others, have decent setplay but nothing crazy, good footsie buttons for dictating the pace of the match, utility-based projectiles, and at least one or two visually confusing moves for mix-ups and feints. I also really enjoy Vega, Bang Shishigami, Piccolo and Blue Goku in DBFZ, K' in KoF, and the trenchcoat boys in MvC3. I play characters outside of this archetype too, like Haggar, Jin, Siegfried, Terry Bogard, Noob Saibot, etc. but they all usually share at least a few of these qualities. I like to win neutral then skip neutral.

The difference is that waifufags are mainly searching for a character they're sexually attracted to above all else and are less interested in the actual game and its functions. Given that most fighting game players are straight males, there has to be something else appealing about a male character for them to appeal within that audience, whether it be their appearance and/or personality (which, with well-designed characters, corresponds to their fighting style directly - after all, developers should want people to buy their game) or their specific functions. Samurai Shodown has a few hot girls, but none of them are lightning-fast ninjas who gang up on you with a husky.
Of course, good female characters also follow sensible design principles but, given their gender, inevitably attract superficial attention. Angel from KOF, for instance, has a loopy personality and odd getup which makes sense with her confusing, mixup-heavy fighting style - however, her sex appeal (in her debut she stripped if you won a round - no doubt a suitable reward for making her work) inevitably attracts people turned on by her who aren't necessarily interested in actually playing a character with her function - hence why she's often dropped because she's 'too hard to play'.
The waifufag typically picks characters based on their unrefined instincts and superficial desires rather than selecting someone suited for their personality, strengths et cetera. It is harder for them to get better - even good - at fighting games than the non-waifufag because their hearts aren't really in it for the right reasons.
Of course, waifufaggotry isn't the only superficial means of picking a character. How many truly Phoenix Wright players have you come across in UMvC3, compared to those who picked him because 'lol he's a lawyer in a fighting game'?

In World Warrior, I played Ryu...Championship Edition - Vega...Hyper Fighting, Guile...Super Turbo, Balrog...and in SFIV E. Honda and SFV when I did play it, I played Zangief.
It's important to me to learn almost every character archetype and movetype (grapplers with 360 motions, defensive charge characters, rushdown quarter-circle shoto types, etc.). That way you can play almost any character, regardless who you end up maining.

Samurai Shodown V Special on Fightcade is a good place to start at the moment. Since there's hype for the new game coming out this month people of all skill levels have been playing it so it's not like you'll get your ass kicked all the time. Execution requirements are low insofar that there's barely any combos, but you'll still need to know how to do your specials when the situation calls for it. Overall it's better to stick with your normal attacks, so it's a good game for teaching you how to open up your opponent through positioning and using your attacks wisely, as well as getting in their head. Another plus side is that although there's a wealth of characters to choose from, the game is very balanced. Anyone can win.
Super Turbo isn't good for beginners. There are matchups that are way too lopsided, wakeup reversals only have a one-frame window and most people you'll run into have been playing for years.

I don't play many Fighting games and picked up UNIST on a friend's rec. Usually I feel out characters to see what moves I like which UNIST plays especially nice with. The moment I picked up Yuzuhira I had not looked at combos, fucked around with her moves for 5 or so minutes then beat said friend's ass on his main playing what I considered to be rock, paper, scissors, aerial attack, iframes dash. I do not enjoy how most fighters feel and most of my time is on SC2/4. Her kit being individual disjointed moves you turn into something working is what I loke most out of fighters.

One that I've been using that I've gotten pretty consistent at is:
j.2C > 2C > 4C > j.B > j.2C > j.C > 66C > 236A > 214B (I think the EX 214 might work here as well if you've got meter).
You of course can start from 2C instead if you want. It also works off of grab into 2C.
I've also done 2C > 4B > 236A > 9 > j.B > j.C > 214A IIRC or something along those lines.

Pick a character I like the look of. I have pretty eclectic taste when it comes to character play style, so aesthetic is the best I have to go off. After getting better at the game I start to branch out to other characters and will usually settle on a character whose gameplay I feel most comfortable with. While I’m okay playing any archetype, I will still usually find characters whose play styles or just gamefeel I enjoy more. And the longer I play a game, the more I start to value function over aesthetic. In Tekken I started with Eliza and Leo, after messing around with other characters I’m now playing Kazumi and will probably pick up Jack and/or Dragunov next. I like poking and find iWR to be really satisfying to perform.

Eliza was the first character I played. Legit didn’t know why people thought she was weak. When I switched to other characters it opened my eyes to the fact that, among other things, having your 15f launcher be a special mid with no crush properties that is launch punishable was actually not normal.

There are I believe 4 higher level Yuzu players that regularly join up in the lobbies so it'll definitely be better to drop in when they're around in the threads.
In case you might not know the schedule, it's Sunday-Thursday and starts usually around 9:30 PM PST running til either around 12:30 AM PST or later depending on if a 2nd lobby gets made (me and some other people usually make 2nd lobbies after the initial one is over).
