Age of Empires II: HD Edition

Fun

great new civ pool and balance updates, really fun new campaigns (africa and rajas) but laggy online matches with a 20 year old lobby system. use voobly if you are going to be playing online a lot

>come back to AOE 2 after years of not playing it
>can't keep up with the AI at all in a regular game

Should I observe some AI at highest level and see what they do?

No, AI isn't really the way to go. If you are interested in getting better you should check out some fast castle tutorials, which is the basic build order. I'm not sure how much you played the game back in the day, but there is a huge competitive scene and a wealth of relatively wholesome content on youtube nowadays. I recommend checking out T90Official as he does expert castings and breaks down the meta and what you need to do, and also TheViperAOC who is the #1 player in the world and makes a lot of fun content as he's so good he plays for fun and trolls outside of tournaments.

Recently got into watching this game competitively.

It's really exciting shit.

Check out T90 official and spirit of the law

Yeah, it's really fantastic how it just keeps getting bigger. Hidden Cup 2 was incredible. For those who don't know, it was a 1v1 tournament where the top 16 players in the world played with their identities hidden under the name of a hero (like Joan of Arc or Erik the Red). So there was a lot of excitement because you didn't have a preconceived notion of how each player would play in a matchup, which led to great entertainment and a ton of surprises.

NOOB DIPLO REGICIDE, GREEN PING ONLY

The absolute best video game ever created. I'm not even exaggerating. There is nothing this game does not excel at and it's aged like fine wine.

It was a masterpiece in 1999 and it's a masterpiece 20 years later. Microsoft can suck my dick but if Ensemble was still around I'd suck their dicks and buy it for $60 and still be more than happy with it.

Anyone who tells you they only play on the original is a fucking moron and should be ignored. The DLCs not only added nothing but good content but they fixed a lot of balance issues too

Why are the campaigns still so comfy bros? I love the little narrations at the beginning of each mission

I 100% agree. The game mechanics are simple enough to be timeless. Also, I think one of the game's greatest strengths is how fun it is regardless of your skill level.

>missions have fun narrations
>fun little hidden things to find on the maps
>goofy voice acting in the missions
>fun towns to explore

They are video game kino

GOAT unironically. Everytime Yea Forums does a top 100 list it ends up in the top 15 and is always the only game no one disputes belonging there.
It's incredibly comfy, fun to play whether you're good or bad at it, has a killer soundtrack, 100+ hours of single player content, infinite amount of multiplayer fun times, custom content, actual history lessons, and the most gorgeous 2D graphics created by man.

There is not a single video game I would rather be forced to play for the rest of my life than AOE2. You can get it and all the expansions for 11 fucking dollars RIGHT NOW and you're a fucking idiot if you don't because they could release it for $60 and it'd still be worth it.

how does v play this game what’s so fun about it
it’s kind of boring

I’ll need to watch that later. Sounds like good stuff.

The Attila campaign is especially kino. That ending plot twist shook me as a kid

That's the problem with AOE2. It's too good. There's nothing to make fun of, every meme about it has existed for 20 years so there's nothing fresh to get younger audiences interested. You can't make fun of it without sounding like a retard because there's nothing to actually make fun of. It's too well made, and that lack of flaws makes it boring to discuss which is why you rarely ever see threads about it on Yea Forums

Help me. Is there a way to win with Teutons, other than Trush?

That, and any time there’s new content released the /pol/tards derail everything into a racebaiting shitstorm.

Teutons have good defensive bonuses, so defend in feudal, go castle age and do knights or siege or monks, or you can go imp and do paladin, gunpowder, siege and halbs, bombard towers, etc. They are very versatile late game but I don't really like playing them.

I play big ol' FFA matches with my IRL friends with unlocked teams and revealed map
we slowly build up our autism forts then one of the two good players attacks the other starting a war the two good players battle it out with 500 pop armies while doing diplomacy trying to get the support of the less practiced players (or sometimes we just "colonize" the weaker players ie: building mining camps in their territory and mining their shit and they can't do anything because you have a post imperial age army and they have some piss-ant army of longswordsmen with no blacksmith upgrades

the players are:
me: the best player, free to destroy all in my path unless the others ally with each other (which they always do)
Goths fag: 2nd best player, major threat if left to reach post imp, handles large scale macro well
Goth fag's brother: 3rd best player, ALWAYS allies with Goths fag. Attacking him even slightly makes him go into turtle mode, building millions of towers in a cramped base
Wild Card: 4th best player, makes a wide variety of units and handles large scale macro decently, takes longer for him to reach post Imp than goths fag but can hit pretty hard when he gets there thanks to his good unit comps
Trade Noob: Always picks the spanish and tries to make a million trade carts, will research every upgrade in the game before attacking anything, he's potentially an extremely useful ally since he can give you millions of gold but he normally just hoards it to himself
Noob: very slow development, and weak micro management, often the subject of colonization, sometimes wars break out because people start fighting over his pristine untouched gold mines

The ironic thing about them making fun of the "we wuz kings" aspect of the African Kingdoms is that the original game's content was far more offensive to /pol/ sensibilities. The entire Saladin campaign's tone is "Muslims so advanced, so cultured, europeans so barbaric". If it came out today they would be beyond triggered.

>They are very versatile late game but I don't really like playing them.
Because you run out of Gold very quickly.

I don’t watch Spirit’s games. I love his Pannenkoek-esque breakdowns of how the game works, though.

All power civs have that issue in the late game

t90 for gameplay and spirit for math

1v1 black forest vikings only

>hey guys, spirit of the law here
comfy

Why do people play vs ai? is that actually fun? I dont get it.

KANGS

>just chilling and making villagers
>suddenly hear HELP THE CRUSADERS ARE ATTACKING OUR TRADE..ROUTE
>what do?

Agreed.
