The point of mentioning that was they have been majorly successful in the past when even half assing it and this is the biggest investment they've put into the xbox brand and they've invested more into the brand in the last 2 years than they've done in the last 15 years.

I don't believe BC will be a selling point and history shows this. The ps3 had BC and it didn't sell for shit even after Sony price cut it to $399 a year after launch. The ps3 was consistently being decimated till they further price cut it and released the slim in 2010 and that's when sales really started picking up and even more proof BC doesn't mean shit is because the slim doesn't have back compat at all yet it was the best selling ps3 version.
And if you look at xbox one sales they've barely changed since back compat was introduced even with some really good enhanced back compat games.
BC is essentially for enthusiasts but most people don't care about it. They just want to play the new games.

The PS3 was a colossal fuckup in many ways and it doesn't alone disprove how big BC ends up being. It launched a year later, its launch titles sucked for over a year, didn't have killer apps since everyone was making new IPs

BC is huge in this new discussion because both boxes will launch the same time, unlike the PS3/360, and be around the same price with likely the PS5 being inbetween the cheaper and more expensive SKUs that Xbox has. So people will look at that, and go with the console that they immediately have a big library for especially with all these GAAS titles and games being padded to last 50+ hours

Demand for Japanese games has been so high that xbox is receiving insane support by jap devs for AAA games now. Nier was ported due to demand, same for KH3, same for monhun and now the same for shenmue 3 because the xbox one logo was leaked on their site. Ff7 remastered as well.

Porting is still a costly and time consuming process. All of those games have physical editions as far as I know and getting physical boxes and all that wouldn't be worth it if they believed the demand wasn't high enough. The problem with kinect was the announcement for it and the console were done wrong. Kinect would probably still be alive if Microsoft actually focused on the games but had kinect as a secondary thing but they focused solely on kinect which put a lot of people off like who would want a games console that isn't even designed primarily for gaming use.
