Thank god it didn't fall into the hands of the makers of the dullest rpg of all time! Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.

BG2 introduces some really stupid VN tier companions that won't shut the fuck up. Not to mention you are already leveled up from the start which kills all sense of adventure. Also the villain sucks.

And it's more strategy because you don't have to react to what enemies do: you have to predict what enemies do. They can't move during your turn but you also can't move during theirs

Current WotC seems to think that Baldur's Gate was always about the city itself, while in reality it was always about Bhaal and his resurrection. You don't even get to Baldur's Gate until 3/4 into the game. And BG2 doesn't even take place on the Sword Coast.

Fuck no 5E's Fighter isn't better. 3.5 Fighter has access to Martial Study/Stance which completely shit on Battle Master, dozens of damage/control feats, Dungeoncrasher and Zhentarim Fighter substitution levels, and naturally does a hell of a lot more damage because 3E PCs in general do way more damage than 5E PCs do. Straight Fighter is also not the right class to compare to anything but the Champion: a better comparison would be Battle Master vs Warblade and Eldritch Knight vs Fighter/Suel Arcanamach.

Yep. Jumping into BG2 with a new character works just fine. It's not like Mass Effect or something where story carries over. It's just your character, and BG2 character creation starts you out with an appropriately leveled up character right off the bat. Plus Pre-EE there were lots of character options that couldn't be imported due to kits so lots of people just played starting at BG2.

I'd argue those feats are far too good to take for martials in general, really. Feats like GWM and Sharpshooter are the result of 3eisms where the designers actually think a slight accuracy debuff is a fair trade for a massive damage boost. Even then, Sword and Board builds are just fine, and only Two-Weapon Fighting is actually downright "weak".

Playing it in both DOS1 and 2, it just felt like a constant slog. A fight that could be resolved in seconds in RTWP is stretched out to ridiculous lengths. You never feel powerful because the game doesn't give you good loot and every fight is 'on the wire', whereas BG2 had very clear peaks and troughs when it came to difficulty - BG2 wasn't afraid to make you feel like you were powerful.

Pair that with Larian's Monty Python world and humor and this is shaping up to be an absolute disaster.

Fighter/Cleric dual is nuts if you go Berserker 9 into Cleric. Berserker/Druid is also good, but focuses less on healing and more on being fucking invincible.

Ranger/Cleric is a pure support character with access to every divine spell in the game. If you're on EE edit the .ini to allow it, because it's defaulted to fixed in those versions.

What was the ToB good end? Good MC is canon for the first game, and the BG2 goodliness seemed centered around denying your bloodline. I only beat ToB evil and ascending.

Huh, i feel the same about ice Wind Dale, compared to divinity. The whole dog pile and maybe use an ability every now and again felt pretty bad. Same with pillars of eternity, they just feel like a messy clutter of information overload, except it isn't really, it's still fairly slow, manageble and lack luster. Maybe it's the animations, or the walls of text describing the lore. Or the fact that they make enemies flat out imune to everything but one type of attack, or the fact that for the most part, but I'd rather be positioning characters, using items and spells, manipulating the eviroment, you're kinda just sitting there, watching guys wack each other, while you try to conserve mana. I can play through it, but if I were to compare it's involvement and the enjoyment I get out of it compared to divinity os, I'm afraid I have a hard time seeing how it's better. But hey, maybe baldur's gate does it better.

Divinity OS comabt is ridiculously easy to break and you can get OP realy fast.
The point is that youre not supposed to feel OP, you feel powerfull by fighting increasingly more ridiculous and stronger opponents and coming out on top.
You dont feel powerfull by killing the same weak enemies but faster and with more ease. Becase thats boring.

in theory its a nerf to the caster. In reality, it makes the caster dominate the spotlight.
the same is true with spell slots.
In theory, this means that the caster has to ressource manage while hte rest of the party doesnt.
In practice, the fighter the ranger and the monk need to take a nappy every 20 minutes becausse the wizard blew all his spell slots already and is now throwing a tantrum

If any of the lore conflicts with the games, it's going to be retconned. I'm willing to guess that the vast majority of people that played BG2 didn't read the comic book or read any of the fan-fiction novels based on the games even if they were approved by WotC (simply for milking shekels from fans, obviously).

Rtwp is turn based except you chose on the fly which turns are passed very quickly and which you obsess over. Simple turn based system would make battles overstay their welcome, completely fuck up the pacing and remove all sense of tension from what would become a mediocre puzzle game.
