Its a decent 3d modelling of the 2d Mario, so it really didn't need to "appeal" so much because people immediately recognized it from the previous games.
Mario 64 was impressive mostly because it transitioned the franchise so smoothly from what it was previous and did a bangup job on the controls considering the 64's controller.

Pretty much what said. Mario never really had any appeal until Odyssey and that's still not saying much. When it comes to the main Mario series no one plays for the characters alone with Rosalina, Luigi, Wario and Yoshi being the only exceptions.
Of course, if we're talking spin-offs that's when characters like Daisy and Waluigi become more relevant.
