This is a game series where a demi-lich could be defeated by sending out skeleton warriors into the fog of war and waiting for it to die, and then defeating the second form by casting protection from undead once and hitting it with a +5 weapon once or twice.

It's not made for the original fans. This is a modern AAA action rpg, with 300 people working on it. Baldurs gate is just being used for brand recognition.

Baldur's Gate is just a city in a major recurring D&D setting. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the previous games, we're just talking brand recognition for a Forgotten Realms game.

You guys aren't involved in RPGs, either as a hobby or on an industry level, so let me let you in on a little secret.

With WOTC involved, there's one major thing you can expect, and that is pandering and virtue signalling. It started off just a passing thing, but pandering for woke points is literally 100% of WOTCs business model right now.

They have one priority, and that's to sell you SJW nonsense, alongside selling you the same products they've released over and over again. So you can expect this game to have A.) Either direct references or actual in-game party members based on characters created by celebrities in their D&D events, and B.) them selling you adventure modules that they've already published and sold on every other platform for full price.

You really don't have to play the first, bg2 is vastly superior. I spent years starting and restarting bg, but I always got bored or frustrated and quit.When I finally did finish and started bg2 it was really the only time I cursed my autism for not letting me start from midpoints in series. Not only was bg2 so much better, but nothing aside from some companions and child of murder god really carried over. It just felt so pointless.
