Of course crowdfunded games aren't guaranteed to succeed either but they can reach their audience better pretty much. This doesn't just apply to sex games but also to shit like the cRPG revival.
Anyway, what does this all have to do with sex in games? Well, erotic games are indie games, that's just how it's always been due to corporate moral policies. Those pushing the window of acceptability for sex in games won't be "tasteful fade-to-black" Bioware-esque games, it'll be fap material made by relative amateurs. So if you want to track where erotic themes in games are going you have to look at the indie market.
Though there is an aside to that I think: the mobile market profits HUGELY off of porn, it's just all secondary shit. Every major gacha game has countless doujins and truckloads of porn fanart to go with it.
