Early, Pre-Movie Spongebob was excellent in that it was a kids' series that didn't necessarily treat kids like idiots at the same time it slipped in adult jokes. It was also never really meanspirited in the way that Nu-Spongebob is - anyone who acted like a dick got what they deserved, but the show never went out of its way to overtly punish characters without reason. Part of the reason everyone loves the band episode is because the town comes together to help Squidward, the resident jerkass, and for what feels like the first time, he gets what he wants and gets to be happy at the end, no strings attached. The game took all of this and, alongside putting in a lot of in-jokes, had decent, soulful gameplay that makes it a modern classic.

Nu-Spongebob focuses a lot on realism and shock humor because they're out of ideas. Pretty much everything has been done already, and so they rely on gross-out humor and even more ridiculous storylines without a real sense of continuity or cohesion. This is why it fails, and this is why most Spongebob games that came out after the movie, the ones that aped this style of Spongeob, are pretty bad (alongside being the usual licensed garbage).

Because seasons 1-3 and the movie had talented comedy writers, once the movie was over, several of the original writers left.
New spongebob is handled by a completely different group of people. New people, new style, new humor.

Squidward was always the soul of the show. Seeing him get mutilated every other episode was nauseating on top of being unfunny. Can’t believe the writers didn’t see that.

Good post. About that last paragraph, the writers have actually tried utilizing older concepts and characters that we haven't seen in a while. For example, characters like Bubble Bass and Doodlebob have made some reappearances lately. I personally think it's a joy to see them again but others seem to think that it's just blatant nostalgia pandering. Another thing that's annoying however is the way that they're desperately trying to recapture the funny faces from past seasons by making meme faces every minute.

I think the problem is more on the fact that rather than natural re-introduce concept and characters naturally they are mostly showboating the fact they are back, so it feels like nostalgia pandering. Like they wanna go "LOOK! THAT THING YOU LIKED OF THE OLD EPS? ITS BACK, AND ITS THE CENTRAL FOCUS OF THE EPISODE!" rather than be a episode first and having the returning element second.

Then there's the whole can o worms with the episode that it's all about the "My Leg" guy; Completely missing the point of why the "My Leg!" running gag was funny in the first place.

I'm rather excited for the remake because it seems to be what we all want (yes some people complain about the art but its only concept art, things might end up looking better ingame). It's a remake of BFFB with a lot of the cut content and multiplayer. It really seems to be the embodiment of what Spongebob USED to be given a new coat of paint for the modern era. Hopefully if they add new content (outside of cut content and multiplayer) into the game we get stuff like being able to use Mermaidman and Barnacle Boys gadgets to stop villains (like Manray or The Dirty Bubble), Being able to turn into the hero forms from that one episode (ya know like The Quickster), more bubble moves (like being able to use a bubble as a shield or to float into a new area), an actual fucking use for Shiny Objects besides unlocking new areas in levels and getting spatulas, ETC

The game had tons of stuff like this. When devs/directors blatantly care about the material they're working on is when it's soul. Soul doesn't mean budget or graphics; when you care about something, you'll do your hardest to make it as good as possible with the tools you have available.
It's difficult to call modern games soulful because cut corners are more obvious and amplify their perceived laziness. Like Witcher 3 is soul, but they cut corners to get the game out which shows in the Ciri part of the story. Battle for Bikini Bottom did this as well with cut content and useless assets still in the game, but since the technology was more dated stuff like that was just normal back then and it's easier to just ignore it even though it's lazy/they had a time restrain/whatever it was.

That's just wrong, those designs are based on the most recent version of the SpongeBob tv show which had way less character, humor (and intelligence of humor), creativity and was aimed at a younger demographics with a much lesser range of appreciation for older people.

Pretty based post. The writers were completely changed after the movie, and the team of writers they had (comedy writers who had actually planned on writing the show for adult swim) left. So the charm of the show (large vocabulary, jokes for adults interwoven into the slapstick, witty monologues, etc) were dropped. Plus the beautiful oil artstyle was dropped after the movie (I think). Season 1-3 spongebob is absolute brilliance and serves as the golden standard for a kids show. Everything after was a shell of its former self made entirely to sell toys. But, man, at least we have those early episodes.

The gamecube/ps2 version was the first "good" Spongebob game (though it really was the first and only 3D game despite not being "the first" game)
However, the second BfBB came out and blew it out so hard in terms of improvement, it made RotFD instantly refereed to as a "shit game" (with the added realization that it really wasn't that good to begin with)
After that was "The Movie" game which was good in it's own regard. Especially since it stood on it's own in an era that was constantly shitting out movie tie-in games.
Though most still preferred BfBB over it.
But then everything post movie Spongebob, was post movie Spongebob. A completely different world.
