Fates was so bad, that it weakened my trust in the brand. I will never fucking buy a Fire Emblem game at launch again out of concern that I'm not getting the full product. It was just that bad of a localization.

Work on other unionized entertainment products? Video game voice actors are never limited to just video games. Animated TV shows, animated movies, commercial voiceovers, radio voiceovers, dubbed imports, a lot of them even have live action roles even if it's as extras or one-shot "character of the week" bits. Plus all the people known for live action roles who get some voice roles as well.

A lot of the Fates writing was outsourced. Not only the original story draft was done by an external writer, even if the final script had many writers from other companies involved.

They're pared back on that a lot since then. Even the Fates DLC went back to just an internal IS team and Echoes also was done internally.

Because if you don't join then you don't work. But Nintendo is an outlier who isn't really concerned about hiring just union actors.

Seems like most of them get replaced by non-union VAs though, especially in vidya.

I'd worry about the quality of the script before worrying about VAs.

They're all unionized, unless the entire project is non-union which really doesn't happen anymore unless it's some indy title. Just because a VA is lesser-known doesn't mean they're non-union.

Switch 1st parties are all worldwide releases now.
Localization happens alongside game development now instead of the devs being done with the game and then handing it over to NoA or whatever localization team they use.
Treehouse travel over to Japan to discuss and work with them on the localization.

Just look at 3H trailer from E3. It was already in English rather than just in Japanese.
There hasn't been a single controversy with localized Switch games involving any kind of censorship, cut content, or whatever.

I don't remember if it was an uproar, but something similar happened with the new game "Judgment" by the Yakuza studio. Actor got caught doing drugs and fans didn't really care and wanted him back, which got the police buttmad. Could be paraphrasing it wrong, but it went down something like that.

Union rules in Japan typically don't allow roles to be recast unless the actor consents/dies, or if it's an adaptation in a different medium.

Guilty Gear changed the VA because the older seiyuu died and renamed the character but now the new game has the same character. I guess Japan doesn't care as much anymore.
