Did you play the Xenosaga trilogy? How did you feel about it?
Did you play the Xenosaga trilogy? How did you feel about it?
I played through half of the first one, dont think I have it in me to keep playing
I really loved them overall
1st is good but short
2nd is shit and absolute garbage in every way
3rd is way too short and only has a handful of good moments and the ending is just shit and Shion is a stupid ho
All in all only the 1st is worth playing.
Redpill me on xenosaga, i tried xenoblade on cemu and the shimmering and zero AA just ruins it to me, i have a ultrawide so if the PS2 emulator support's wide-screen hacks that works fine on ultrawide i will try on Sunday
I played Xenosaga ep 1, .//hack ep1 and Digital Devil Saga ep 1 back then when they came out, but i was too lazy to followup with their episode 2s. By the time the sequels came out, I was already feeling lukewarm.
I'm playing through them now. Only a little ways into the first one but it's interesting enough. There's a lot of shit going on that all the characters know but that they're refusing to tell the player but that's fine, this isn't my first Evangelion knockoff, I know how it works.
Only thing that does bother me is that Shion, despite having built and programmed Kos-mos, doesn't seem to have a fucking clue how her robutt works. I mean sure there's probably a ton of unexplained bullshit going on like she's harboring the soul of a dead god, etc. etc. but Shion thinks the robot is people despite every single thing Kos-mos does proving her dead wrong, and despite, you know, having programmed her. It's not really a dealbreaker for me and it'll probably get cleared up later but it's kind of annoying right now. At least it's nice seeing Kos-mos be a stone cold motherfucker before she presumably grows feelings later.
Also Allen is the most beta fucking pathetic piece of shit, jesus christ he EXISTS to be a pathetic loser, why is he even a character.
Virgil was too cool to live, I hope he comes back in some form. They can't have given him that much character just to axe him like 4 hours in, right?
I heard 3 is quite ok. 1 is quite a slog due to unskippable english dubbed cutscenes and early-ps2 era loading times.
The big issue is that it was supposed to be one big narrative cut into 6 parts, but it's not in the usual LOTR-movie/Witcher/Mass Effect/etc. game trilogy way where each installment has its own arc. Rather, it's more like one grand arc cut into 6 parts, so at the end of ep1, you'll feel largely unsatisfied with a lot of questions unanswered
First game is slow, even more so upon replay, and overall little happens, but it's a serviceable introduction; second game is an excellent continuation with many appreciated improvements; third game is completely streamlined with several corners cut, but it at least manages to wrap up the story. Sort of. Left a lot to be desired, but I can understand that there were time and budget constraints.
I enjoy replaying 2 the most, followed by 1, then 3.
You can definitely skip cutscenes, m8.
Shion didn't build KOS-MOS. Kevin did, and KOS-MOS is largely a black box with him dead.
If they release a trilogy, would you play/buy it?
Wasn’t it xenogears that was supposed to be 6 parts, all part of a continuous narrative? And the game we got was part 5?
No, it was Saga.
Unless it includes content that was left out due to budgets, no. I already have the games,
I feel like people just play these so they can say they played them. Come on, shit is boring as hell.
I only played the first one but I liked it a lot.
I just finished the games for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I really loved them. I don't really get why people shit on episode 2 so much - outside of the character design and VA changes (which were genuinely terrible), I felt it was about on-par with the first one, even if it was noticably shorter. Instead, I'd say the low point for me were the Old Miltia bits in Episode 3. They just dragged on way too much, although the conclusion to them was great, so I'd say that makes up for it.
KOS-MOS' original designer was Kevin, Shion just assisted and then continued the work.
Also, if you're emulating, make sure to play the uncensored version of Episode 3 once you get around to it. The English-dub uncensored version is only available on EPforums, as far as I know.
Played through all of them and more recently went back through them and 100%d them. getting all the collectables, leveling to 99, maxing out eggs etc.
I enjoyed the series. 2 was obviously an attempt at trying to be more plot focused and it failed because no one knew what the fuck the plot was in the first game to begin with.
3 was them just showing their horrible financial management skills, same shit that caused xenogears to die off.
>HURRDURR THEY STOLE MONEY FOR FF8
okay sure, they still can't manage money.
Playing through the 2nd one right now, I liked the first one a lot although I think it peaked a bit too early since the Gnosis attack at the beginning was the best part of the game.
friendly reminder that Andrew did NOTHING wrong.
This dude got waaaay too much screen time in the first game.
What about that loli he strangled?
Come on
>Kevin built Kos-mos
See that's a thing I don't know yet. I know he was involved, but any time someone brings up Kos-mos it's to mention that Shion built/designed/programmed her instead of that it was a collaborative effort or even that she barely did anything. This is the kind of stuff I mean, where the characters are all in the know but the player won't know until the plot demands a grand reveal.
but yeah I'm playing the undub/uncensored because fuck I'd never be able to deal with the voices otherwise. MOMO's already bad enough.
Waiting for the collection with the upgrade version of 1 and 2
Playing the xenosaga trilogy is the most intellectual video game experience in existence. Please play them.
I have all 3 games and I was going to play them after I finished Xenoblade X. Anything I should know? All I really know about the series is that 2 is considered the black sheep of the family.
>it's to mention that Shion built/designed/programmed her instead of that it was a collaborative effort or even that she barely did anything
I'm pretty sure that was not specifically stated by anyone. It is the case that she's the next most knowledgeable person, though, and they treat her as such. There's also a clear connection between Shion and KOS-MOS, which is also taken into consideration.
>Anything I should know? All I really know about the series is that 2 is considered the black sheep of the family.
Just play the games.
Everyone shitting on 2 didn't play it. The massive shifts in character design are pretty jarring, but some are definitely improvements (Momo), combat is interesting enough to be different from other jrpgs, and it's short enough that playing it is worthwhile for the story leading into the magnum opus that is 3.
1 is the best and the only one they tried with, 2 is a garbage fire and one of the worst games ever made, 3 is them panicking and skipping 3 games to half ass the story's conclusion to a lukewarm end. It was a very troubled series.
That being said, it's on MGS4's level of cutscenes. The first game was a lot of solid, traditional JRPG fun. 3 isn't bad, especially following 2, but you can feel how much the soul was gutted.
>jarring
It's really just Shion and KOS-MOS. The other characters just have less exaggerated features. They also gave Chaos some fucking pants.
There's a conversation between Shion and someone (I can't remember) on the Elsa when they're headed to 2nd Miltia where the other person asks her why she doesn't know what Kosm-os is doing and says something like "didn't you make her?" and Shion replies with something like "well, I was in charge of her basic logic programming" and then trails off.
I get what you mean, it's just confusing how Shion treats her like a human despite all evidence to the contrary, and no one seems to point this out, least of all the game. I get it, it'll make sense later, but right now it's baffling how little it seems like she understands. I've even been reading the in-game glossary but they're dead set on not telling me anything until it's time for PLOT.
I'm just bitching anyway.
I'm still mad the translation efforts for xenosaga 1&2 on DS got shitcanned. It's truly one of the best ways to play the games, the combat is great, the boost system still exists, and it even goes into detail about some shit that NEEDS to be explained, like kevin building kos-mos. But most people don't even know it exists.
How well do these emulate on current PCSX2?
Easily could've surpassed Xenogears but the botched development irrevocably fucked any chance the series had of being a cohesive product.
If the first game was as polished and well-designed as XS3 then I'm sure we could've gotten the full series as it was meant to be, but it took Monolithsoft 3 games to find a decent aesthetic.
And that's not even considering all the spinoffs and side stories that made the series even more of disheveled mess than it already was.
Fucking this, I just finished the series a few weeks ago as well and XS2 gets way too much hate. Like you said, character design and VA changes sucked but the combat system was much better than in the first game, which dragged like hell once you got to the song of nephilim. I'm pretty sure people just bash it because they didn't feel like actually learning it and decided to just slam their head against a wall for 20 hours instead.
1 had the best directing but outside of that I thought it was the worst in the series. Ugly graphics, slow battles and fucking 5 songs outside of cutscenes in the entire game. I actually enjoyed 2 and 3 as I was playing them especially 3 while 1 was a chore after the 20 hour mark.
>spoiler
Agree there too, but the third descent sequence made up for it imo.
People like who unironically think XS2 is one of the worst games ever made need to replay the game or something.
Solid enough. All 3 are capable of reaching the end, there's some weird slowdown in a few parts, and graphical fuckups here and there (mostly towards the end of the game when the enemies are using fancy attacks.)
It was a clone of his wife. You know, the one who was cheating on him, and called him shit and worthless. Even the little girl called him garbage. Did you miss the similar looks?
Liked 1, started playing 2 and I was absolutely disgusted by the complete dogshit "art style" it had, so I dropped it and never looked back. I wish they remade the trilogy, since I've heard 3 was great again, but I never played it back in the day.
Be aware there's a save game bug that there doesn't seem to be any fix for, some save points will just crash the thing. You're better off using save states (if you don't already) instead of manual saving.
From having played it recently: pretty much perfectly, with some small issues that can be fixed with a bit of tinkering:
>1 has an issue where the game will sometimes crash when using a savepoint, so just use the emulator's quicksaves
>1 has the screen turn black during flashbacks with a sepia filter, that can be fixed by switching to software mode
>1 & 2 have a visual bug with a black spot appearing on the ground, that can be fixed by changing the resolution to custom (native also works; just not the default 2x, 4x etc. options)
>3 has a dark hue covering the screen during a lot of scenes, but this only appears if you're using one of the video plugins (can't remember which one), so you can fix it by switching to the other
>3 has major slowdown when using the game's menus, but this only appears in hardware mode, so switch to software mode at least when using the menus
>spoiler
I know it was because of his wife, but I wouldn't be sure if it was actually the girl calling him garbage, or his mind conflating his wife's words with the girl in front of him. I'm more inclined towards the latter, since the guy was clearly prone to psychic breaks. In any case, that's not really a good reason to strangle a child
It's confirmed that it's his wife's clone. How? Because her gnosis is with him when he turns into gargoyle on the mothership.
