It comes nowhere near Mario in terms of depth of mechanics or level design. It's a step above most other bargain bin 3D platformers of that era but it's nowhere near as good as Mario, Banjo, or any of the big sony 3D platformers.

The only reason people really care about it so much is the spongebob license. I feel like most of the people praising it haven't even played it since they were kids or just don't play many 3D platformers in general.

Not him, but by generic I assume he means that the game doesn't really have any defining mechanics. It takes the standard approach of most licensed platformers of only having a basic jump and then sort of double jump and/or hover. You see this is practically every other licensed or budget platformer and it tends to create really boring/repetitive level designs.

A lack of a defining feature is bad because it's what makes your game stand out. Most of the big platformers that people remember have some defining mechanic that makes them stand out. The Mario games have stellar movement and a ton of polish, Spyro has a glide which creates levels with a lot of horizontal platforming/large gaps, Ratchet and Clank has an emphasis on guns/combat, Sly Cooper has stealth/parkour elements. Battle for Bikini Bottom doesn't have that, it's just a generic double jump platformer with spongebob characters. I think it executes the formula much better than most other licensed platformers, but there's nothing special about it and no one would care about it if it weren't for the license.

Played this game a few years ago for a half an hour and it terrible in terms of a platformer. The levels were flat and no mechanics were introduced that aren't in every other game. I don't see the appeal, could someone explain how the levels/gimmicks are good in this game? Also, would you still call this a good game IF it wasn't a Spongebob game?

Some of the special learnable moves that Spongebob does are pretty interesting and interact with the environment in cool ways. Other than that, it's nothing too complex, unless you want to dive into the technical movement glitches. But if the game wasn't a Spongebob game, it probably wouldn't be as remembered. But because it was solid enough in gameplay and faithful as fuck to the show, that's why it's been remembered.

It's a good game BECAUSE it's a spongebob game. The game is average, but in a spongebob atmosphere it bumps it up to an unironic 8/10. However, I feel like their previous game Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights was much better and more deserving of a remake.

The past couple years have been alright for 3D platformers.

Lots of 3D platformers have been getting remade or ported to PC recently.(Ty, Voodoo Vince, Kao, etc.)
Haven't played Odyssey but I assume it's good.
Hat in Time was great(though a little light on content).
Yooka Laylee was overhyped, but is a genuinely fun game if you don't go in with high expectations.
Snake Pass was amazing and one of my new favorites.
The Ratchet and Clank reboot wasn't as good as the original but was still pretty fun.
Super Lucky's Tale was decent.
A million lego games.
There are a bunch others that I haven't gotten around to playing yet but have heard good things about(Skyler & Pluxx and Astrobot come to mind but I know I'm forgetting a few).

There are also a lot of recent games that you could consider a 3D platformer if you stretch the definition a bit. Stuff like Sunset Overdrive or Gravity Rush are pretty heavy on the platforming elements.

It was alright. Not as good as the 1st movie, which wasn't THAT fantastic. The 2nd movie was also more of an abstract ride, like an eleven minute episode that got extended to one and half hours. Best parts are the 2D animated segments.

It doesn't need a pretentious amount of "depth" like the games you probably play. All it needed to do was capture the universe that it adapted and it did that perfectly.
