What I don't get is why they didn't just make a new game series with a Forgotten Realms license if they really wanted that. Obsidian had nothing to do with the originals and Black Isle was only the publisher. Bioware made the BG series but everyone involved has moved on or went to Beamdog.

Not always GOG has the only DRM-free version, not always all DRM-free builds are on GOG.com. Cases in point, KIDS, Undertale (pre-GOG release) and that weeb Wizardry game.

Considering it takes place well over 100 years after BG2, probably not, but it's likely to be full of references and gags relating to the originals. Expect golden clothing, a miniature giant space hamster, and references to party members. Likely even meeting some of the elves.

Assuming the truth maybe. The guy who owns this character sheet is currently coding a graphics engine for NWN EE in Canada. Most of the rest either quit game development or went to Beamdog which was created by one of the Bioware founders Trent Oster. All of the quirks to the series were based around their office jokes and shenanigans and their games of D&D.

As for the story the protagonist literally becomes like a demigod over a hundred years ago from current date FR. It's over, finished, move on.
