Nah, I'm joking about the gay shotas (although HxH attracts a lot of fujos). It's similar to the average shonen, but unlike other shonen in HxH there is a greater emphasis on making plans before and during fights. In other manga the characters just attack directly, while in HxH everyone takes their time to think about how to defeat the opponent while avoiding falling into their traps. It's something like Naruto mixed with chess.

Regarding YYH, though, it's just super damn real with its MC. Great, relatable characters, especially villains. It's just a fun ride.

Ton of characters from Disgaea, most of the movers and shakers from Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, Lenneth from Valkyrie Profile, SIN from FFX, Id or Grahf from Xenogears, Kos-mos, Kuja, the list goes on.

Shonen battle is more cerebral than other shonen manga. Most of the good combat is done with narration and character dialogue instead of purely visual in its drawing.

As far as in universe magic powers that make superhuman abilities possible, nen is one of the better systems of magic in shonen stuff because its broad enough to let the writer create the most wacky and stupidest abilities and movesets for a character, but also limiting enough per character to make it so they cannot do everything power wise.

HxH also routinely changes focus on the main cast of characters. The story arcs aren't all about Gon and have switched to focus on other characters where Gon isn't really doing anything or barely involved which is also atypical for shonen

see, the tactical fight idea i like, and my cowoker made me watch the bugman and the old man who keeps losing limbs fight. that WAS cool as fuck. but the story seems like hot garbage thats never getting finished, so i cant figure it the hell out and i really dont feel like trying. i def get the appeal though
yeah, that one is pretty good. i liked the rose whip brudda, his abilites were pretty dope. im mostly a /M/ kinda guy. code geass, robotech, shit like that, but i do like most shoen

Gon finding his dad Ging is the starting point of the anime yes, and his motivation to improve due to hearing from everyone how great, powerful, and helpful Ging is to basically everyone he meets.

Gon and Killua get involved with this due to winning Greed Island...basically a giant 'video game' Ging created with some of his friends. Winning the game let Gon take some powers out of the game to the real world. Using these powers they tried to basically teleport to Ging..but Ging being the biggest shitposting troll planned for this, and because Gon brought Killua with him this triggered a trick in the cards warping them to a person called Kite. Kite was Ging's apprentice and saved Gon when he wasvery young..even telling Gon of hunters and his dad thus instilling the drive to find Ging. Kite though was already on a mission to hunt and kill Chimera Ants...they just tagged along to learn/gain expertise. tldw...shit goes bad, real bad. then nukes and shit. plus gon omega hexes himself to rape a cat girl.

If you want to watch hxh watch the original anime up to greed island, the modern anime absolutely bastardizes gon's charcter development earlier on and slashes a lot of key details. But at greed island they quit trimming out information and modern was way further.

I love that it has One Piece style world building, lots of weird things, places and facts that will never factor into the main plots. They're just part of the wider world. HxH still has a number of places on the map that qualify for the Here There Be Monsters tag.

Unlike One Piece, not everyone is marked with Skyrim essential status. People can die, sometimes horribly and in droves.

i watched it when i was like 12. Not sure if i would like it if i was watching it for the first time at this age (27).
I guess thats why i never got hooked on naruto. Didnt watch it when i was younger and i cant muster the strength to watch it long enough for me to become invested in the story/characters.

1999 up to greed island. 2011 once you hit greed island. original builds up the beginner in a far more superior manner. Anyone who disagrees is objectively wrong.

1999 episodes are longer, have a bit more filler but that kinda gives it more soul.
2011 you will find 2 or 3 episodes from 1999 compressed into 1, changing the story slightly but making each episode more interesting and fast paced, slight variations to characters designs and general aesthetics which i consider blander and soulless.

Gon feels like a typical yet at the same time atypical shonen protagonist. He's fairly straightforward but his ideals tend to change based on who he values. I like him because he's interesting to me. Like you'd expect a kid to loathe their father for abandoning them, but Gon sees the world so differently he believes his father left him because being a hunter is just so cool.

The appeal is more or less the same for any shoenn. fights and cool characters. What you want? lol but basically
