That's the thing. When it Lia falls in love with Rance at the end of the first game, it's a funny joke. When everyone loves Rance it feels more like they're just stroking the egos of the fans who imagine that they could be like Rance.
Because the ends don't justify the means. Basic ethics.
Especially in this case, because it's not that he does evil things in order to also do good. He could just save the world, he also chooses to do evil just because he can exploit the situation and intimidate the people around him into letting it happen.
