I like the idea, and I don't know how it works, but it could probably done better. Ideally, there would be various conditions for rarer pokemon to show up. I know they mentioned weather, but it'd be nice if they took it further. Like in Snap, in order to get a slowbro, you had to lure a slowpoke into getting its tail bitten by a shelder.

GF should really do what Square Enix did with DQ11 on the 3ds and Switch where you can change it between 3d rendered graphics or 2d sprites. Gen 5 was the downfall of pokemon for me because of the focus on shitty looking 3d above all else

Yes, a pipe dream really. It's my dream pokemon game though. Pokemon roaming around, actually interacting with their environment and each other in a sort of ecosystem.

I think the big fucking problem with pokemon was when they started incorporating JRPG style story as the main feature of the game and allowing the world to fall way into the background. My favorite part of X/Y was when the story took a goddamn break and I got to piss around the world for a moment without being told what every route was. The old formula of pokemon gen 1-4 would have worked forever. Each gen we get a new region and a reshuffling of certain mechanics. Its an immersion game at heart; bells and whistles getting cycled through would have worked just fucking fine.

Well, SMT uses mythology and urban legends as a source of its creatures. Maybe find some other source? Unless you're an artist yourself, or know one, I don't think you'd be coming up with interesting designs from scratch. And then of course, how do you differentiate in gameplay?
One game that I love that has a capturing mechanic is LostMagic. It's an RTS on the DS, but you capture various creatures that have various abilities and status and elements. So maybe go in that direction. Take Pokemon, and try to fit it into some other genre and go from there.

It's hard to make a "monster catching" game that doesn't feel like pokemon, but here's some basic ideas so you can start thinking about what direction you want to take it.
