That being said, does calling actually make it any easier? Wouldn't calling yourself only increase your number of potential total discards?

I've never seen nagashi mangan in action. How does it play out? After the final discard of the hand, does your character speak like when they ron or tsumo? Does it just pop up the score screen?

The match ends, but instead of the noten players splitting the 3k to the players in tenpai it goes to the win screen for the nagashi player and they collect the 8k tsumo points. Riichi sticks remain on the table.

Had so many bad games where it's just an accomplishment that I was able to fight my way to 3rd every time, then had another of my favorite kind of games

Usually, you shouldn't full betaori unless all the useless tiles you have left are dangerous or your hand is trash and far from tenpai anyway. And even then, if you're behind and you're in late South or are playing East-only (lol), the risk-reward assessment is different and you should probably push no matter what.

Do you know furiten? Suji is using furiten to not get ronned by two-sided waits (like 4-5 waiting on 3 and 6). That's about it.

people like to go for open waits (3/4, 5/6, 7/8, etc), and you can expect players to have them more often than other waits. so if someone discards a 5, you can guess that they don't have an open wait via 3/4, which would make 2 a slightly safer bet than usual. of course they could have a 1/3 and ron your ass anyway, but the odds are more in your favour to expect people not to be in tenpai for a closed wait

Not necessarily, actually. If your hand isn't anything special (or on the contrary, have a lot of doras), it makes sense to call a couple of times to get the hand ready. That's why you see a lot of calling in high-level rooms.
But you have to actually recognize whether or not you are killing your big dick hand by the calls and whether or not the call leaves you with bad wait (don't call then) or does not advance your hand (absolutely don't call then).

An easy way to memorize suji is to compare a discarded tile to the number directly next to it in the shared column: (1-4-7), (2-5-8), (3-6-9).
If I drop a 7s, 4s appears a bit safer because that means I don't have 56s.

Tried this for a while. I can see it giving noobs weird closed waits or furiten waits. Need to experiment more.

Tile efficiency is a meme anyways. You can only calculate based on tsumo efficiency, which is useful but not necessarily actually the most efficient. Even a ryanmen is hard to ron off of if you're obviously tanyao and one of the tiles you're waiting on is the dora, especially if everyone else is going for tanyao as well. Most efficiency calculators don't simulate pons / chis, which are a huge factor in many hands. Many efficiency calculators don't take the expected win / loss values of your hands in consideration, especially compared to what your opponents are doing.

Basically, tile efficiency is less about "which tile do i discard to get into tenpai faster" and more about "IF i discard this tile, what am I waiting on and how likely am I to get it?". When you understand the WHY, the HOW comes quickly.

The only yaku here is riichi right? Would you go for it 2 draws in or try make something with more points?

Mahjong Soul is the best option for a free, English online riichi mahjong client right now. I looked up the subject a little bit to see if there really were other options, but the only others I found were in Japanese or so old that they were missing a lot of QoL stuff that MS has. I guess there's Final Fantasy XIV, but that requires a monthly fee to play. I've also seen it described as being worse in quality than MS, but that's to be expected when the mahjong aspect isn't the dev's main focus.
