I don't know what this thread is aiming to accomplish, even actual Dragon Quest fans don't give a shit about Erdrick, or any of the heroes really. They're all blank slates, except arguably DQV's hero.

I just find it strange that Cloud and the Geno costume are the only things from square in smash when so much of Nintendo history comes from square. Thats why you should always do things in house.

DQ Fag here. I don't care about having a DQ rep in Smash Bros. The best characters are secondary characters, which won't be used. Roto and Slime would be boring, but more iconic. So overall I just don't care.
The only reason I would like a DQ character in Smash is to market the series in the west. A DQ rep being in Smash Bros would do more to market the games outside Japan than Enix and Squenix have done in 20 years. But that's also why I think Squenix will not allow it. They don't want Dragon Quest to be popular.

The actual Dragon Quest games themselves are the epitome of fanservice. Each game has nostalgia tie ins, throwback characters, repeated story points and classic monsters. So if a DQ fan wants fanservice, they just play a Dragon Quest game.

Actually, he routinely is in the top 5 of Dragon Quest polls. Remember, he's not just in a game. He's got an ongoing manga series, two anime series and is referenced in hundreds of non related anime series/games. He's an icon in Japan.
That said, Japan would probably prefer Bianca, Alena, Female Warrior or Martina as a playable character. As would I. But Roto being put in the game would still get all the fans to buy it (the few who don't already own it).
And having any DQ rep in the game would bring 100x more awareness of Dragon Quest outside Japan.

Basically Dragon Quest VIII with next gen hardware. DQXI was great, but I want a return to open world and stronger character stories.

They've all been remade except IX and X. And X is already a remake of IX. We just didn't get it in the west.
Horii should put all his effort into making new games from now on. That said, one thing they need to do is a 1080p enhanced port of VIII on PS4/PC.
