There was actually a Gorkamorka video game in development a long, long, long time ago that got cancelled.

The only thing I can think of is that it's trying to get kids into Black Library as well as the overall game. God knows that Warhammer 40k in general doesn't need any help appealing to kids already.

Not necessarily, I got into it when I was 7-8 after playing a demo game when I went into GW to buy the Lord of the Rings magazine they ran back in the day. The store guy went all-in on describing how my Guardsmen had prayed to sanctify a flamethrower to destroy this thing called the Soul Cube that was dripping blood and had screaming faces modelled into its side, and men throwing themselves in front of the flamer guy and getting blown apart into bloody chunks by Chaos bolter fire as they moved up the board.

I was instantly hooked and the Imperial Guard are still my favourites to this day thanks to that store guy. It's a shame that demo games have been standardised to use the current starter kit, they were much more creative back then and always followed some sort of narrative. I don't think I would have been anywhere near as engaged by the modern demo format.

I love it when kids bring in their models to my local games workshop. I do a "scenario" with them to teach them how to play the game, describing the battle like it would be in a black library book. Wishlist on that:
-update everything for modern systems from the previous DoW1 era
-actually add storage units for both resource types (1 per type), so that resources don't pile up anymore in unlimited amounts on resource counters that are safe from enemy influence
-have some wider spanning tech tree than *upgrade the main HQ 3 times* with all units staying relevant throughout the game - easy teching promotes sitting in your base opposed to having to try to actually fight for resource points to get the tech development going
-infantry and vehicle limits should depend on structures built that produce these, the more structures the higher the unit limit, but with these structures becoming more expensive the more you already have (and also taking longer to construct) - because the low unit cap was a problem on large maps
-unlike the original game there should be 2 stealth mechanics: camouflage and actual stealth with camouflage limiting the range at which you're seen by enemy units that have no detector abilities while stealth should make units invisible, except towards detectors and for such only at a lesser range than regular sight range - because some units (especially squishy ones) can't be allowed to have stealth but camouflage would fit them perfectly
-faction identity needs to stand out without making any faction either OP, braindead / boring, weak or annoying to play
-the campaign should be about territory conquest as in Dark Crusade / Soulstorm but with each mission actually being designed for each faction instead of just being a skirmish map and without that starting army bullshit that ruins any attempt of balance
