This project came about because of Marvel's new desire to promote the X-Men after neglecting them for so long, it reuses assets from Marvel versus Capcom infinite but with a mass improvement on the visual quality
Because of the failure that was Marvel vs. Capcom infinite, Capcom is focusing all their effort on a large starting roster, story mode and single player content will be patched in later

X-Men have been suppressed so hard in comics during the pre-Fox buyout MCU era that there's very few "nu-Marvel" X-Men. At best you'd get X-23's era, but Laura already got into Marvel 3.
At that point the worst case if they kept it to X-Men would be shitters like Daken.

Joke's on you, X-Men doesn't have any new characters on its main rosters. They just have a never ending parade of teen squads to succeed them, but then each of their books gets cancelled and they fade into obscurity for the next team to take over.
