Butcher Bay is a masterpiece, the sequel is kind of ok. Lot of stuff was ahead of its time.
Same team/studio did The Darkness 1 and you can feel it.

I honestly can't remember if I ever played Dark Athena...is it as good as Butcher Bay? Because that's a tall fucking order.

It has Butcher Bay in it remade using the Engine used for Dark Athena which gives you that good lighting and those shadows etc

Surprisingly good game with fantastic atmosphere. Dark Athena is only a small expansion though and not as good as Butcher Bay
I almost had no problems with playing it on Windows 7. The only issue were white artifacts on water in Dark Athena I couldn't get rid off.

Get the patch, or if you are using NVIDIA, get that custom driver tool and enable extension limit.

GoG has DRM free perfectly functioning copies, even on win10 if he wants to buy it, and I can't imagine he found a fucking boxed copy somewhere. I don't think anyone even puts optical drives in their pcs anymore.

Since you seem to be playing the original, there is a bug with gaming mice. You need to set it to 125Hz.

I got a retail copy since games are long gone on digital stores, Yea Forums told be specifically to get the developer's cut, because of things like that didn't fix it (could only get 120hz or 144hz), but lowering the polling rate on my mouse setting did

looks good now, game won't go above 1080p, fov fucks up for some reason, but still it works

Yeah, I was referring to the polling rate.
If you are using NVIDIA, enabling that extension limit option can get you soft shadows.
I'm currently modifying the shaders of the game to make it look even better.
