Not really. If someone is stupid enough to keep playing SFV all these years they'll keep with it unless capcom actually rips the IV drip out. Even if it is 5 characters at once, players get bored of a character in a month cause there is so little to figure out. Everyone jerked themselves off for a year talking about Sagat, then gave up on him after a week. Which is why they needed the whole games as a service model. Capcom knows fans don't actually need significant content, cause it is just shallow as well. They just need to make them feel like something is happening regularly.

Long as Capcom keeps pumping out costumes and supporting the pro tour drones will stick with it.

This is never going to happen. No matter what they do it will never change. Partly cause the core is just kinda shitty, I absolutely loathe normals in SFV and I doubt they will reanimate them to make them bigger than a gnat's dick. Many people will never like vtriggers locking up their moves, which sometimes used to be standard. But also cause Capcom can't help themselves, they managed to tank a all of last year's work in one stroke with ads. Which also revealed most people hadn't even attempted to follow what updates SFV has had, look at the comments on articles at the time and it is the same 8 frames no arcade mode complaints. SFV has the interesting position of a substantial mass blind fan boys vs the general consumer who will never think good of the game.

That hasn't been true since last year. It is an on and off thing with MK11 clearly being the leader right now. SFV can mostly maintain while slipping a bit, but big new releases and games like T7 growing catch up eventually. It won't die as such, but becomes less relevant.

To me at least it seems clearly that AE was a failure as a relaunch. SFV was at 2.5 mil pre launch and only 3.1 mil now. Around EVO things got weird, two characters at once and then just dumping costumes and content for a few months. After that fuck all, they had worked through all they had. Almost like they were cleaning house to decide where SFV was going. Kage seemed like a throw something together so we at least have something. Which would explain him seeming weak and under tunded. It also explains the ads, got to recoup the costs somewhere.

I believe the MonHun guy strolled in and said we are fucked and need to rethink everything. I can see another but smaller relaunch happening, not a lets save the game relaunch but try and maintain whatever we have.

It is unlikely to come very soon. Type Arcade only just launched, they probably want a year or two out of it at the very least. Would probably piss off arcades/manufacturers if they didn't. SF6 is probably 2-3 years off.

Capcom themselves have said that Arcade Edition was a successful rebranding.
Say what you will about SFV, but the consistent costume stream and the e-sports revenue is making them a ton of money. That said, I do think they're working on an RE Engine fighter.

I don't see how you can look at the past 5 months and go wow Capcom saw AE's relaunch as a huge success, so much so they refuse to even reveal if any more characters are coming. So successful they cut FM rewards again in the hopes you will buy anything. Is this what you would do after a successful relaunch? Capcom claiming AE was successful is bullshitting by any metric we can see.

The esports side being successful, that is another story. But the success there is making deals with companies to pay them, not AE as a relaunch or SFV's dwindling entrant numbers and viewership. That is why they need something to maintain players. AE was a failure as a relaunch, so now they are doing whatever they can to make it useful for sponsorship deals.

Personally I think it makes a lot of sense to put smash in a fighting sub-genre. "Platform fighter" is pretty descriptive of its key mechanical differences. There's certainly no existing genre where it fits better.

You forget how much they take on all the pro tour sponsors. I mean T7 getting 1 new sponsor added 100k to the price pool. Capcom take anything they can get with the pro tour, while whoring out the SF brand hard as possible. The biggest reason to support the game is whatever they can make from esports, but you gotta make it at least appear like you care about the game for that to work.

I'm not him. I think it would be easy to do what he described and craft a set of "rules" for the genre that exclude smash. It's simple to do when you set out specifically to do it.

A more difficult challenge would be asking you to name the genre you think smash is part of, and explain why it fits there better than as a sub-genre of fighting games.

Most fighting games feel like ass. The only games that really feel good to me are hyper fighting, third strike and soul calibur 2. usually stuff like jumping or dashing just feels really clunky. A mixture of poor keyframes of animation, slow gamespeed and input delay makes games "feel" unnatural.

Smash plays nothing like traditional fighting games. It is some kind of platform baseball with simplistic characters and controls.
