Mega Evolution absolutely did. You can write it off as a gimmick if you want but it had a really substantial impact on competitive battling, and not just because it buffed older mons. There were situations where when you chose to Mega, what you chose to Mega, etc., were relevant aspects of the mind game.

Personally I like the concept of Kaijumon. Lazy or not it seems like a decent compromise to only allowing a limited set of 'Mons access to the mechanic like with Megas and the fact that it's limited to 3 turns is an added bonus since it shouldn't dominate and entire match.

Make it actually fun to explore alongside Pokemon. It boggles my mind how even after 23 years or so the battles are still the only real appeal of the games. Still they keep introducing and removing new combat mechanics over and over again even when nobody asked for it while copy pasting the same generic worlds.
Cycling around in a 3D environment in and of itself should be fun, but it's not because of how rigid and stiff the highest grossing franchise in the world still feels.
Even adding something simple like non-linear gym battles like what Crystal Clear attempted would be a welcome change.
Now I wait for the horde of Pokemon fans to scold me and tell me that these suggestions are somehow bad because it's not the same old.
