I was excited about Funcom's new game back in 2007 when they started the ARG viral marketing campaign. But then it turned out to be another soulless MMORPG.
making it an MMORPG and trying to cash in on that didn't work out as much
I still have fond memories hanging out with the community though & I still hang around in Legends
I was really hyped about the game until I saw the combat back in the day.
incredible soul but maybe the worst Combat of all MMOs
>no one appreciates the riddle and puzzles in the investigation quests.
So much atmosphere I hope to play something like it again one day
FFXIV 1.0
It's soul without a decent game. The guy who wrote the dev should have written a book instead. Or maybe a tabletop rpg setting.
Solomon Island was fantastic and the faction hubs are good, but the other regions are trash.
You need special talent to fuck up Transylvania as a setting.
was there a phase where they planned it to be a single player RPG?
i honestly doubt it
>the first day when it came out and everyone was scrambling and spamming in chat how to solve the Kingsmouth Code
>that community event where they had someone actually drive out to some part of Canada to hand off a secret code to them to solve the mystery of a larger event
i admit the mmo has its moments
If only Secret World Legends would've only came with the engine and combat improvements, rather than the streamlined WoW 1-60 linear progression level system.
>start up this game expecting just another MMO but in a slightly cooler setting
>few hours in I am searching up stuff in the bible, dusting off my latin and translating morse codes
This game really is something special. And I honestly don't even think the whole MMO aspect was a bad idea. I liked the idea of other "agents" out there, struggling. Playing with friends was cool. They also made id so there weren't trillions of players jumping around ruining the atmosphere.
Wait what, I thought Transylvania was supposed to be good again? I dropped the game during Egypt and I keep thinking about going back and biting my way through it to reach the next area.
MMOs are chat programs. People play them to socialize and shit. They have nothing to do with vidya.
Is it completely dead? I've been meaning to play it for some time
>devs creating fake websites and loading up videos to youtube you have to research

This game is literallyy oozing soul.
I haven't played in a year or so, but last time I played people already said the game was dead and I still found some small groups of dedicated players to play with. I even ran a few dungeons and did some cool secret world events. I might have just been super lucky though.
That being said, you can just play solo user. Or maybe invite a friend of yours to play with you. Focus on the main and investigation quests and I guarantee you will have a good time.
That is as long as you can bare the minimum of combat and fetch quests, you can't ignore them completely of course. As an MMOtard I didn't have much of a problem with it, in fact I enjoyed clearing everything on a map simply because of the atmosphere. But maybe you will find yourself overwhelmed if you're not used to it.
This is the only MMO I ever pre-ordered. Went to a panel for them before it launched, was fucking H Y P E D.... But the gameplay was shit and I barely left the first map. Legends is a good improvement though. I recommend it to new people who want a different MMO experience
What are you talking about? People can't shut up about them
More like the shitty combat and broken UI killed it. The puzzles were so fucking good but the grindfest and nonfunctional UI were too much for me to put up with.
On here, sure, but back when the game had a bigger playerbase most people would just rush through them with a guide to grab the reward.
>That being said, you can just play solo user. Or maybe invite a friend of yours to play with you. Focus on the main and investigation quests and I guarantee you will have a good time.
I wanted to do exactly this. I'm not a big fan of MMOs, but the games seems really interesting despite it, and I was more worried about things like lack of dev support, servers not responding etc. than the number of players. fetch quests and grinding aren't a problem for me, I kinda like it. thanks!
WHY CANT SECRET WORLD THREADS EVER HIT 50 POSTS
Bump
This game was a great concept and wold have been easy 9/10 if it was singleplayer with single player combat mechanics.
Instead they were forced to make it into a MMO and the whole game suffered as a result.
I guess it is what it is
Meanwhile bunch of Funcom stock holders get accused and convicted of Inside trading, for reasons.
because its dead, let it go
>tfw will never spam Strange Attractor in fusang again
TSW has a cool setting
I wish Funcom hadn't of just re-launched it to cashgrab, They never even completed porting all the old game dungeons into the new combat system game ffs.
And then they relaunched Anarchy Online, holy shit.
The voice acting and overall dialogue in this game was amazing. Even irrelevant NPCs that just offer you 3-4 fetch quests have so much shit to talk about, it really adds to the atmosphere.

Funcom fucking suck, all of their games are just lame MMO garbage with shit combat mechanics. The Secret World had a great quest system but everything else was ass.
I don't understand how people can play these games with the canned combat where you press fucking number keys to fight robotic lifeless mobs that don't react to their environment or do anything interesting.
Did you expecting anything else from the Norskejævler
who runs the company?
Early conceptual stages, yes. But it was also supposed to be set in the 20s. Some of the ideas carried over, but it became a fundamentally different game in setting as well, and not just because it turned into an mmo.
Yes, they’re good. But when you spend more than half of your time in a game killing shit, combat needs to be at least palatable.
Transylvania is good. Egypt is the dullest zone, but it has its moments. Tokyo is fucking great, but it was plagued by the drip feed of new content, which was glacial, and the AEGIS grind
You can obviosuly play it solo, and what story content is there is pretty great, but bear in mind that the game is pretty much moribund, it's not going to get anything new and it'll die soon enough. Legends was a desperate last try at resuscitation and they fucked it up.
I literally remember every single quest-giver in this game because of the way missions are presented to you.
user you do realize that pretty much EVERY 90-00's mmo used this kind of combat, right? its not like its specific to funcom.
also people enjoy that kind of combat because it means they get to go crazy with builds. just look at the supreme autism involved in making a good build in anarchy online.
>They deleted my character in the transition to F2P
Okay. Whatever. Is this shit even worth it with the new combat gimmicks? The combat was so flaccid despite having a GW1-styled system for builds.
I mean they needed to, the way the combat and leveling is now it's totally not applicable. It's a different system entirely. The combat is better. Not great, but better. More active, at least
I remember being in the same general area for some investigations and people would ask for help. When I gave them a hint, they would would reply with, "can you just give me the answer?" What a bunch of no fun faggots.
I still remember translating Morse code even though I've never done it in my life. I should have stuck with the game some more.
Tornquist is a great idea/setting/dialogue/plot guy (for the most part), but he's not good at gameplay.
>great lore
>great quest system
>great character development system
>dogshit awful gameplay
suffering
>I enjoyed clearing everything on a map simply because of the atmosphere.
The only way to play, really. All of the missions add up in the end and complement the main story. It's a shame that Legends made it all worse. It was supposed to be a combat overhaul, yet they made the combat WORSE. How do you even fucking manage. Also lacking content. Fuck modern Funcom, they even supposedly have all the major story beats from Tornquist in order to continue the story but we're not getting that ever now.
Do you think they will shut down the servers in the forseeable future? This game is something that I keep installed on my PC and keep coming back to occasionally to breath in the atmosphere and do a few quests. I would hate to lose that.
that game with the graphics of the division and maybe the gun play and the story of secret world would be so fucking awesome.
I hope some billionaire is producing this.
It's marginally more active, while also being completely flaccid as an "action" combat. It lacks all the depth of the original, while not making it any more engaging and deprives you from actually having a fucking cursor in the game and combat. It's so fucking ass. The original only needed something to shake up the stale meta, the relaunch and overhaul was so misguided, they really didn't understand what the fuck they were doing.
Technically it's still there on the original game server. And all you could do was preemptively claim names, nobody ported their old character in to the new game.
The new combat system sort of front-loaded unloading finishers instead of building up to them like you did in the prior game. Also the meta is a lot less complex under the new system. Some weapons were a lot easier to use, anything that had a mechanic you had to micromanage (elementalism, blade, blood) were generally worse despite being harder to play because you had to pay attention to your weapon gimmick. Okay, Blood could get gud once you kitted up with the right grimoire.
The most braindead easy to use was Hammer from what I remember AND it was the best damage.
play it for the mission writing. if you just want combat i'd say give it a pass.
Fair point. I do remember the whole 'No class' system of the first, you can change your build on the fly thing...I haven't played the original in ages though, I just remember the combat being so bad I couldn't get past Solomon island, but in legends I got halfway to Japan. Yeah new combat is definitely more restrictive than the skill wheel thing. But it's more tolerable
I really don't see why they'd keep the servers going on for long. There has been no word since the launch of South Africa when the next bigger content update is coming, or any news for that matter. It's quite probably hemorrhaging money because not even the whales are interested any more since they have nothing to sink money into and look forward to.
or imagine to melt Division, Secret World and Black Watchmen together.
Holy shit that would be the unholy trinity
The original combat was archaic, but it at least had interesting mechanical complexity. It was pretty much the spiritual successor to Guild Wars. A lot of theorycrafting could be had when you got to it, but the initial impressions were always pretty rough.
Legends takes the idea of an "action mmorpg" and doesn't understand what actually can make an action combat in an mmorpg engaging. It feels floaty, lacks depth and is terribly unbalanced favoring some weapons over others.
Lack of endgame content killed it.
Seriously having to do the same 6 dungeons again and again in 3 diferent dificulties gets boring quickly.
And the only raid has just one boss.
Great dungeons with great tematics tough.
But yeah lack of content. Game only had 8 zones not counting hubs, compare that to wow.
So should I play Tornquists new walking simulator? We all agree that the writing and atmosphere was the best about TSW so a game with minimal gameplay to fuck up might actually be good, right?
I want to take that smug cunt's handguns away, hold one to her head, bring her to a climax with the other and then pull both triggers
Yeah yeah, "have sex" lololo shut the fuck up
Wait no, there were two raids.
New York and the Kingsmouth one.
But man the amount of grind you had to do to even get the key to enter the raid.
You had to farm raid mobs on all different zones to get pieces to summon regional bosses, then kill said bosses (not real mechanics just avoid fire tipe stuff) to finally form the final key.
I just wish it had more stuff, got bored after 500+ hours of the game.
I thought the same thing about Cultist Simulator for Alexis Kennedy and good lord it's like that game was deliberately designed to be unfun
A short list of similarities and differences between TSW and SWL mechanics:
Similar:
>Can equip any combination of two different weapons
>Can change your build whenever out of combat
Different:
>TSW has passive and even active ability effects that have cross-weapon synergies
>TSW allows you to use passives from any weapon with any other weapon creating a huge swathe of different combinations and interactions
>SWL has passives that only enhance its own weapon's abilities or mechanics
>TSW gives you the option to use reticle combat
>SWL forces you to use a reticle, thus removing an active cursor form you so that YOU CAN'T EVEN FUCKING READ ALL THE STATUS EFFECTS AND OTHER INFORMATION IN THE HUD MID COMBAT
It's 3 hours long and the girl is a literal tumblerina, it is suffering.
Same, read about it and though, cool I like cults, cool culty stuff.
Turns out the the gameplay sucks utter fucking balls.
Is SWL already dead again? I played for a bit when it launched but hit a wall with my shitty build when I made it to Tokyo and kinda gave up.
