I'm not a defender of Odyssey, but the art-style was the one saving grace for me in that game. I fucking hate the plain, sanitized New Super Mario aesthetic that they use in every game, like 3D World. So it was actually refreshing to not see that and see actual interesting designs and ideas again. Yes, it was incoherent, but that was the point. He was on an Odyssey around the world and I liked that each location he visited was radically different from the others. I'm actually worried that with the next game, they'll go back to the shitty boring NSMB art-style because Mario isn't travelling anymore. Hopefully Odyssey made it clear to them that having weird, original, and creative designs and ideas in Mario games CAN work.

It didn't look like a Mario world though, New Donk city looks like when modders ported Mario to GTA:V. You can have Mario visiting different worlds without throwing established art direction out the window.

Idk, I think it's clear that the NSMB art-style is pretty limiting and restrictive. The devs were probably tired of it too and wanted to flex their creative muscles. That NSMB art-style got stale really quick and there's serious burnout after NSMB, NSMB Wii, NSMB U, NSMB 2, 3D Land, and 3D World. Imo, they should deviate from the NSMB shit but still incorporate the trademark imagery like pirhanna plants, green pipes, question mark blocks, brick blocks etc. because Odyssey was the freshest Mario game in like a decade to me. Tostarena's aesthetic is glorious. I love Tostarena.

You can jump on top of each other and beat each other up, as well as throe catch with objects and using ice slam to send people flying from the shockwave. Aside from that it's mostly just running around spamming voice commands and dancing together

Yeah but Hanayama fought a Megalodon underwater and barehanded and won easily. He also has a superior bone structure and is a genius in the art of fighting.

I chose my time frame carefully. 1996 was the launch of the N64 and 1994-1999 was the era of some of the best video games of all time. It's not QUITE as good as Super Mario 64 was during its heyday but captures the same feeling almost perfectly.

For how varying the stages and timepieces are I feel like the base game is pretty much the perfect length. It doesn't overstay its welcome in any of the worlds.
Seal the Deal is a mixed bag because the cruise is short, and kind of bad save for the game's overall charm, and some of the death wish challenges are ludicrous.
Nyakuza is easy, but okay in length. Good for one evening's romp.
