Wait is this RR4?! What the fuck?
What emulator did you use and what were the settings?
Actually It's one of the PSP games, they brought back R4 tracks.
Ridge Racer 2 on PSP. Includes basically every track in the series to that point (RR5 or RR6 era) and runs at a solid 60fps.
holy fuck I didn't knew there was RR on PSP as well.
Gonna play it now.
Yeah it's pretty good for being the first in the boost era.

Forgot to mention, the emulator is PPSSPP.
Do it, it's fucking fantastic. Handles swell, runs fantastic, looks good (other than some murky car textures, but considering its age and the PSP's hardware, is totally excusable), and oodles of cars and songs to jam to, like . You can skip the first PSP game, the second one is the first but with more content. Same engine, UI and everything.
I guess the only downside to the sequel was that they got rid of the Rally-X car, but everything else is better, yeah.
Giving up the Rally-X car for the silly Pacman-in-a-plane vehicle is totally worth it for the last appearance of the classic #13 body style.
I suppose so, it returned in the 3DS game anyway so I guess that's a way to make up for it.
IIRC RR3D used the oblong floating-dildo design that RR7 uses, but I'm not 100% sure because I never actually finished it. Lost my cartridge a few years ago.
Yeah, 3D used the RR7 design. I was more talking about the Rally-X car coming back but yeah. The Rubber-Banding was atrocious in that game though.
I also gotta give a special mention to RR6 for giving a really cool modern take on the old design, way better than what 7 did.

Accidentally made an RRV thread because I never would have expected another RR thread to exist here, ever.
Already said how disappointed I was in RRV when I bought it as a kid. I have never played any of the other RR games, but RRV just feels... Bad.
Apparently there's more content to it than I ever discovered. That might be because even now I can't even clear the first race in normal difficulty.
How does RR driving work? Do I have to drift or just slow down and take the turns cleanly?
Man, RR6 is so fucking brown.
>I have never played any of the other RR games, but RRV just feels... Bad.
Don't sweat it, I've played most of them and RRV still feels like shit. Something's off about it. Don't feel bad abandoning it, there's not much to it.
>How does RR driving work? Do I have to drift or just slow down and take the turns cleanly?
Drifting is 100% the name of the game. Ridge Racer is the most arcadey of the arcade- your brake pedal/button is basically only used for going back in menus, and in most games you lose little or no speed while drifting. Generally, it works like:
>let off the gas momentarily
>steer into the corner
>get back on the gas
>straighten out steering as the nose of your car lines up with the exit; countersteer isn't needed in some games at all
If you want to give it a whirl in its base form, try emulating the original Ridge Racer on the PS1. It's the baseline that started the series as a Sony home console standard (the cabinet version, while 60fps, can be a bitch to emulate and control properly without an actual wheel) and all later games pay tribute to it in one way or another. The soundtrack is also fucking awesome and the whole game has a very 90's vibe to it that was sort of lost as the series went on and replaced the wacky gabber music with more standard- but still good- electronica and the constant Outrun-esque beach and palm trees with the perpetually under construction streets of Ridge City.

PPSSPP is back magic, and the psp has some great games.
Thanks man, that makes me feel better and now I understand why I was so confused by it as a kid. Weird cyber woman in the intro, can't even win the first race, announcer only has about three lines he constantly repeats ("What's up with him?") and touching either another car or a wall sort of bumps you backwards and slows you down, no matter which direction the impact came from.
>touching either another car or a wall sort of bumps you backwards and slows you down, no matter which direction the impact came from.
That tends to be another RR staple- collision amounts to 'whoever is in front continues on and whoever is behind loses speed.' The cars are more or less just rolling roadblocks for you to avoid, at least outside of duel races.
I see. Maybe I'm better off by just playing NfS:U for another thousand hours. Guess I'm too much of a pleb.
Completely unrelated: Another old game I found in my basement is Maximo vs The Army of Zin. That's another game I could've sworn didn't exist outside of my memory. But apparently people didn't hate it, so I'll try that out next.
Ya think I didn't see the trollface on the building, ya cheeky cahnt.
>Woo! What a counter! You're one heck of a driver! You got to teach me!
>that fucking ui
Jesus christ user that's the ugliest thing i've seen all night
I don't know what that UI goes to, PPSSPP looks like this. the Buy Gold option is just a donate button if you want to support the project, the program itself is free and open source on both desktops and Android
So we can agree classic Ridge Racer has the snazziest livery designs, right? RR4's are iconic as hell, especially RT Solvalou, and the original/RRR's liveries are sort of barebones but still immediately recognizable, like the #3 F/A Racing or the Carrot cars. I know actual race liveries have gotten more and more complex and the series just updated to reflect that, but I have a soft spot for two stripes and some sponsor decals.
it's "You must be one genius of a driver!"
i've been hearing it for two decades and counting
I was recently listening to the Time Extend podcast posted on GTPlanet and their episodes on ranking all the Ridge Racer titles - man what a fun series. Made me want to play through them all again. Fucking great fun.
