MMOs are pretty much always shit. I have nostalgia for Runescape but I realize it's not actually a good game, and I just didn't like WoW even though I played it around the same age.
I guess the best one is one with actually good real-time combat like Dragon's Dogma Online, but that game still has its problems, and you need a VPN and a pretty barebones translation patch to even play it outside of Nippon.

The endgame was pretty bad but it had a lot of very fun and creative quest and a really cool story to get immersed into

Lord of the Rings Online. It needs a modern polish and a buy-to-play or subscription model, not pay-to-win. Middle Earth is too cool of a world to be represented by LotRO even if it's good.

This. The only problem with non theme park MMOs is they're usually a grind. Much of the game ends up being devising a procedure for max output and gains, and waiting while that happens.
